can i update City Navigator v.7 from this v.8 disc?

cn86ug.jpg

it's the full install from a 2720. just wondered really, not sure i'm going to update just now, but it would save me waiting for garmin to issue me an update disc.

i know i'll have to pay garmin to unlock it, anybody know how much?

City Navigator NT v8 and City Select NT v8 are delivered with 2720 and Quest2.

I may be wrong but I think that NT is a new storage format of the map readable only by the newer GPS models. If that is true you will not be able to use the DVD for usage on your GPS.

Maybe there will be software upgrades available later on for older models making them able to read the new format?

The new Quest2 uses City Nav NT, it's a compressed file system. Not sure if it will work on the older units though.

Correct. the NT format is not compatible with the older units. Still no word from Garmin about making the older units able to read the NT format.

So, to answer your question, you can't use CN NT V8 unless you have a Quest2 or 2720.

Here: http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp shows the update DVD for the 2620 / 2650 but at the same rev 7 for a "non-update" Europe? :nenau

Garmins site doesn't seem to have CN Ver 8 and as the 2650 is a 2610 with DR maybe the DVD will work with the 2610? :nenau

I've been using CN Europe v8 NT (and, prior to that, v7 NT, which was never released to the public) since the summertime. The only significant difference is that the 'NT' releases support the geographic reference system that is used for Traffic Message Broadcasts (TMC), which the 7200 and 2720 both support.

My guess (this is strictly a guess, no inside information at all) is that all the cartography will be released in NT format in the future, and that all of the out of production GPSRs (SP III et al) will be able to use it. However, I think that particular CD shown in the picture above is restricted to use in the 2720 and/or 7200.

Keep in mind that Garmin is sometimes forced to restrict the way different cartography media can be used by the organizations who provide the content on it (for example, Navteq, H. M. the Queen, etc.) - that may be why that CD can only be used in the GPSRs that it comes bundled with.

I can't see Garmin wanting to have to support two different formats (NT and non-NT) for each release of the cartography - that is why I think that all of the new cartography will support TMC in the future. If the GPSR doesn't support TMC, no problem - it will be the same as using autorouting cartography in a non-autorouting GPSR.
