Comfy old boots bike service resto thread

Super. I managed to break the aluminium bolt hole on the frame.

Right. I appear to have made a bit of a puzzle for myself.

The abs unit appears to be supported by two bolt holes attached to the engine block. The one in the middle taking a lot of the force and resistance. The abs bracket, left side, it is - from what I can see attached to the fuel line doodah using a bolt and another fixing. They do not appear to be attached to the frame.

On the positive I got my new drill but.

I’ve broken the aluminum fixing at the front, I was thinking I could just rest the front securely in the space at the the front. But there will not be enough support on the left.

Would jb weld hold the chipped Ali part to the engine block? I’ve never used it.

If I could somehow properly secure the left part of the bracket to the frsme, the front part might be secure enough to just sit there?

What a mess 🙈. I expect this thing has been in may rivers and streams before its life in suburbia 😂😂

In the mean time, Dremmel the hell out of all that mouldy old paint and coat with hammerite.

Perhaps I could tap into the gearbox? Make a new bracket?

Perhaps I could secure a bracket to an existing bolt near by. Might need to manifest my inner project binky

So, JB weld with will or will not work.

I think I need to make a bracket. The obvious point to fix a bracket is the bolt on the bottom left. Is that the bike’s main earth point? If I’m to secure a bracket off that it’ll need to have a non conducting washer I expect.

I’ll be quiet now until Saturday. Something has kicked off at work and I’ll be busy.
Delighted the tabs came off the bmw pumps so easily. The bar planning on putting in is m2 btw.

Might be easier if the alternator wasn’t there. Must check if the alternator can be replaced without disturbing the abs unit…might be easier to fit the bracket (s) and then fix the abs unit to the bracket and then refit the alternator.

Don’t mind me I’m just working the problem but if you have any suggestions happy to hear them. I’m only seeing solutions not problems.

Reminds me of the old engineer joke

An engineer is presented with a half glass of water. The engineer is asked “is it half full or half empty?”

Engineer replies :”the glass is the wrong size”

😎

These are in line. A bracket is the obvious solution,

Lads, I firmly believe in life it's better to tell someone they have their zip open! I'd rather be told things I don't really wanna hear than not know the truth.
Loving this post,it’s a brilliant read, have a look at “The Old Mechanic”on YouTube he might be able to help,
Failing that ,,,, Nah I can’t say it 🤦‍♂️
Keep pushing bro 👊
Good luck Baza👍

I've watched a few of this guys vids and i've decided i am NOT taking the alternator out. Going to halfords on my way home to pick up some jb weld. Hoping that fixes the broken ear. New coils, battery charger, tap and die kit and a large box of whiskas kitten food arriving later so I should be all set for a day of fun tomorrow. If I'm lucky my guages will land tomorrow. I'm looking forward to going at the abs bay with my dremmel.

Ok let’s go! I have reattached the broken bit of Ali. Looks like it was cracked before. One edge is tarnished. Used the Dremmel to clean it all up. Same on the bike. Lots of brake cleaner and jb weld. I hope …

The square nut. Learned a lesson there. A squared nut is a captive nut. Look at the state of the bolt. I might just jb weld the hole in the abs bracket as well.IMG_7380.jpegIMG_7388.jpeg

I have amassed more stuff. New coils, new battery charger, tap and die kit and the fiesta motor. All I need now is a steady hand and some 2mm steel rod. This can all wait until tomorrow.

Edit, I found some nails that are perfect width. Just need to cut them to size 👍🏻

Your gas! I've quite a lot of them to trim. Still have to put one on the front of the swing arm gator.

I've lost the bolts for the rear brake. No idea where they are, so I can't drift out the pin on the caliper. I'll buy some tomorrow.

I degreased under the engine, so nice and clean.

Tomorrow is bleed the brakes, get back brake sorted, do valve check and gaskets and spark plugs and hopefully replace the bash plate and install new crash bars and fit aux lights on them.

Oh yeah, gotta buy a new head lamp bulb. I've another LampF warning. Like I've come full circle.

Then I'll tidy the cable ties. lol

End of business today. I am dog tired and I think my diverticulitis episode is escalating - fingers crossed if I end up in the hospital again it'll be the day before I go back to work lolol

I should have bought three bungs shouldn't I? facepalm - they are outrageously expensive too.
Things are looking ship shape and ready for action mate, but top tip you should’ve brought the washing in before it pissed down, to keep in the Bosses good books 👍

Yeah that was discussed 😂. it was decided that due to me being covered in oil and dirt the last three weeks I was exempt 😂😂

Left my blue roll out in the rain. Boo.

Interesting selection of bolts from the alt cover. The bottom one needs replacing - it ruins the aesthetic 🤣

The alt bolt is massive 🥹. Biggest socket I have is 30mm. The belt was changed not long ago and is in good condition and nice and tight.

Perhaps one of you could advise on moving the engine to TDC using the back wheel? It’s early so I don’t want to make too much noise 🎧. Any videos etc say you can just use the rear wheel.. thanks.

Might be a bit late in the day,but maybe one of these might help, plus on the
upside you can use it as a "Dog House" when the "Doo Da"hits the fan
