Comfy old boots bike service resto thread

It should at least give a good description of how to take the tank off......
I'll keep quiet for now. I will need a bit of advice on how best to bleed the brakes. Servo dead. But, I've the brakes that work when the servo is dead.

Last guy who serviced the bike said he couldn't bleed one of the calipers. Worried about this. I can bleed standard brakes...

Hoping everything else is reasonably straightforward. If I had a proper garage, I'd still be out there now...

Something looks odd about the bash plate. In one photo, towards the end of the shots, it has the steel mounting plate still attached? Or did you re-attach this after? Normally when removing this it's literally only the Ali plate in you're haha, leaving the rubber mounts on the engine...

The ali plate looks correct, looks the same as a GSA plate - but yours is a GS, so unclear if they're identical parts?

Did I mention I still need a new lid and gloves? Honestly, you’re watching a lad paying his way back in. If I don’t

It's actually part of the the engine bars. It had a big brace in front of the alternator cover and also the one you noticed. The bars used that double brace as a mounting points.

All the plastic bits now clean and drying outside. My expensive back to black arrives later!

Heading out now to cover the engine etc in degreaser. It's so so dirty. I'm a bit ashamed at letting it get this bad but it does seem to be scrubbing up nicely, I've the exhaust clamp and header bolts soaking in Plus gas. I'm hoping they come off without issue. Gonna leave that excitement for the weekend!

It would appear I’ve this plugged wrong? Red is plugged into 87a. That is an always on circuit that is closed upon key on? It should be the one below? Correct? As in that does not become live until the relay gets a signal from key on?

If I wire spots in and want them to turn off with key off, I just wire the negative to the battery and add the positive to the relay 87? I think that is the way it was ten years ago…

Hey Owen, I vaguely recognise that part..... it looks like a broken part of a clip that was a PITA somewhere under the tank. Sorry can't be more exact :D

If I win the lotto I will call round to ya and we will take a trip up to Joe Duffy Motorrad (y);)
Ah crap. Tank came off this afternoon…

More concerned with perished fuel lines 😃

How many of there were there?

I can't remember, it's just the shape seems familiar. I really wouldn't worry about a bit of broken plastic though. I did zoom in to these pics to see if I could remember, maybe it's not off the bike at all 🤷‍♂️ It's not part of the management plug under the pillion?

Swarfega is great for cleaning bikes, specially dried on oil n dirt...I used it many times, when my expensive Muck Off ran out. Sure use on your hands, if you wish to as well. :green gri

Those old crash bars are the same as mine, SW Motech.

That mystery red wire might be something to do with the starter/relay circuit. There is a permanent live wire to the relay on the starter, but they are known to degrade and drop voltage to the point it doesn't do its job and the bike won't start. The easy fix (which I did around 9 or 10 years ago) is to connect it directly to the battery. So that might be the old wire cut and now disused, or the new one no longer attached to wherever it should be.
You also mentioned the brake servo on your bike. It has iABS2, no servo fitted.
Good luck!

The red wire comes from the loom. From what I can gather, it should be attached to 87- this is a 12 v feed that switches on when the key is turned on. I think it feeds to 12v accessory socket on the beak? Previous owner had a strange double space connector that fed the spots power. Not sure when the red wire fell out but don’t think it would affect starting the bike.

I also found the abs sensor wire to the rear was broken. Wonder if my abs will come back to life! I doubt it but fingers crossed.
Speaking of which. ABS II. Assuming it’s still broken. Do I just bleed the brakes as I would a non ABS bike with out the unit? The brakes work as normal brakes so logic suggests that they should? This is the only thing I’m concerned about.

The pivot bolt has to be 230nm ! So I’m going to get a local guy to torque it for me in his shop. My big torque arm only goes up to 210Nm.
