Comfy old boots bike service resto thread

I’m now the proud own of three torque wrenches. My old one was left half wound for five years so don’t trust it but at least I can test it against the big one.

Scored so 8mm steel bar. Should be handy enough to make the bmw flywheel locking bar.

Sorry I don’t get you. What is normal when bleeding brakes? Air escaping at the nipple? I’ll do the manual lever way next time. Much more efficient.

Abs has been broken for years and mentioned earlier in the thread I’m hoping it’s fixed now I’ve repaired the rear abs sensor. As I understand it, I abs II has a straight through circuit that allows the whole system to be bled manually? It might not get all the fluid out of the unit itself but the brakes are hydraulically actuated and if the abs is dead so what!

As for Joe duffy, cheaper to buy a 911!
Air escaping at the nipple when using a Mityvac.
I no longer have a GS but I used get the old fluid out with a Mityvac, firm it up with the tube into a jar of old fluid and give it a final buzz with the GS911.

Ah that’s good to know. Have to say it was a right pain in the arse! But I was able to do it alone. Thanks for getting back to me 👍🏻👍🏻

I know you have all been staying at home hitting refresh in a state of pure excitement. Well I can reveal the answer to two of my questions. Firstly

IMG_6679.jpg

These little guys. They fit into the plastic tank cover around the edges of the fuel cap hole.

Then there is this:

I found the other one and they slot into the bottom of the metal panels that sit between my legs when on the bike.

I finished the utility room today. Then I fixed my indicator and fitted the switch gear and replaced the two plastic tags that fix the hand guards to the handle bars. Nice to have them again. Popped on my touratech handlebar bag. It took me many many goes to get it all in the right place but I learned stuff.

Collecting my Motorworks order tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Changed my mind. Putting the luggage racks back on. They are currently degreasing in a light solution of sugar soap. Rattle can refresh later. Crash bars arrive Wednesday. Getting a bit tired of it now but it’ll be worth it. Thanks for readingIMG_6668.jpegIMG_6665.jpeg

Oh also, I removed the handlebar raisers. Not possible to torque down the bolts to the headstock properly due to their design so they have gone in a box. I’ll miss them but might look for something that actually works properly.IMG_6669.jpegIMG_6670.jpeg

delighted with the little wrench. doubt it'll survive even one drop but amazing value. used it a lot today.

Another day of work of playing ‘has it turned to chocolate’ 🤪. Up at 5.30. Builders mug of tea and out to the shed at 5.45. Swear I’m turning into my dad. He was always up at the crack of dawn too bless him.

Decided I’ll put the pannier racks back on. So gave them a good wash. Some of the fasteners are so rusted the thread is gone. I’ll drill them out and replace them all with nice stainless. Screwed them to the wall! Thanks to the other thread about hanging panniers to get them off the round! Top idea.

Wanted to take front shock off for a good clean. Must be loctite on it. Couldn’t open top bolt - tried heat but got scared due to the wiring. Yes, I had an Allen key in there to stop the strut spinning. Replaced the cable tie after - I know some of you keep an eye out for this stuff! Cleaned it in situ. Not bad all round fir a twenty year old 111,000 mile bike.

I’m going to try and figure out how to put the rear silver rack parts back on later. I really should have paid more attention. I was semi organised and took photos of how the seat lock mechanism works.
Also removing rear shock. Might drop the final drive oil.

Gonna grab a new relay too. See if my spots on come on when the ignition is on. Have a good day!

It’s a small victory but I’ll take it!

Bought some rust converter stuff. I’m going to stick with my existing bolts for the moment. Might give them a little cost of silver paint but most likely will just leave them the black colour the metal turns after. I’m a bit over whelmed and adding new bolts into the mix is a bit too far for the moment. Plus the amount of money I’ve spent so far is daft.

Lidl has bits are shit.

This bolt is rust welded in there. Anyone any suggestions? Drill the rest of it out? With good bits? Note my photography light doing some heavy lifting.

Sulked in the shed for a few hours and used my fancy back to black on everything Matt and almost black. Everything is now black. Interesting, I had treated one of the larger side panels a couple of days ago. It repels rain well.

I got left-hand bits from HMC Tools and Equipment off Killeen Road when I had to replace exhaust studs on a CBR. They also do taps for retreading.
There is a great place up in finglas as well. https://allmetalfasteners.com/

You can just rock up to the trade counter and show them what you want. Think I’ll go there when I go to Duffys parts for fork seals.

Right, you sitting down? I am. Final drive. I’ll let the pictures do the talking. I wrapped a bolt in gaffa tape and blocked the abs sensor hole while I gave it all a good wash with brake cleaner. Lots of brake cleaner. Then degreaser and finally shampoo. If the paint will comes off in the bubble areas I’ll paint it.
