Can anyone 'indicate' what may be going on with my indicators? The warning on the display is LAMPF but the front RH indicator is flashing fine (but flashing too fast) and the rear RH indicator is flashing (also too fast) but very very faint - you have to really look to see the two LED's are actually flashing. Until I saw the faint rear I thought the rear had gone completely perhaps explaining why the front one was flashing so fast (but doesn't explain the error message suggesting a front fault - lampF when surely it should say lampR).

The previous week on a rideout to Wales these RH indicators wouldn't work at all when I left in the a.m. but after stopping for fuel and restarting they just started working again OK. Weird!

Any suggestions appreciated - my nearest BMW dealer is over an hour away. Thanks in advance :D

THEY ARE LED INDICATORS BY THE WAY

Bad earth usually.
Check for corrosion inside the indicator units.

Basing my assumption on the bulbs being of the normal incandescent type.

And lampf means simply lamp failure it usually won't tell you which bulb it is

Hi, no sorry should have said, they're the LED type. (I'll edit the original post)

You did :)

+1 on poor connection to rear unit. One of the guys on an extended trip had a rear unit fail. Unfortunately it means disassembling half the back of the bike to get to the wiring.

That is taking it to the extreme...High Vis whilst repairing your bike!!!! :D

Packer,
many thanks for the info & photo (& don't worry about the hi-viz, it's only weird if you wear it in the bedroom!).

Guess I'll start taking the back of the bike apart then - a good excuse to spend time in the 'man-cave' :D

i thought lampf meant a front bulb ie headlamp was out, anything at the rear will be lampr.
i think you have 2 faults, and be carful the headlamp will only stay on with the engine runing

Yes but headlamp seems OK. See photo in my next reply to Packer now I've spent some fun time this pm taking the racks etc off to get the seat plate area off.

Back end duly partially disassembled. Now to see if I can borrow a multimeter and try to figure it all out.
Was going to attach an photo of back end of bike but only option seems to be to insert and image from a url (web?) Oh well, perhaps its because I am not yet a subscriber.

Better to get a free Flickr account or similar, put your images on there and then link to them. The old version of the forum only allowed you to post small low res images on the forum servers, anything big and grand had to be hosted elsewhere. Don't know about current version forum.

Well heck, just when I thought the indicator was my only problem! End of the afternoon when I'd finished dismantling the back end to get at the wires/connectors to the indicator (that appear to have nowt wrong with them) I couldn't be bothered to heave the bike back into the garage so I started her up to motor her back in. Rather I tried to. Didn't want to start but had been fine earlier in the day.
I have to have the throttle cracked open a bit for her to start then if I shut the throttle she immediately cuts out. Runing really rough and a bit noisy and running really hot. Also seems to be soot about. What the hecks going on. Almost feels like she's trying to run on one cylinder. AArrggghh.
Decided this morning I wanted an expert to look at this so managed to get her down to Church Stretton Motorcycles and they're going to have a look at her sometime when they can fit her in. Fingers crossed its something simple.

Not sure if it is like the 1150, but it is possible to disturb a throttle cable when removing things and unseat the throttle cable from its seat/mount, just above the throttle bodies. If it is the same, just pull the outer cable up a bit on each side and make sure it is seated in its mount properly. Doesn't half cause probs if it isn't.

Thanks for the info notadrop. Bertie's in with Ian at Church Stretton Motorcycles and I'm waiting for him to call to see what's happened. There isn't much he doesn't know about BMW's but he's got a whole workshop full so gotta wait my turn :(
