Cornwall to Sussex

Am in Wadebridge in Cornwall and tomorrow, am riding to Worthing in Sussex. I can take most of the day. I don’t have any tech with me apart from a Garmin XT and a phone. Any suggestions on routes that are more interesting than the direct route?

Put in the address and adjust the route on the XT for elevation and curves and you'll be good.

The A30 is rather nice, and much less busy than the A303.

Gawd no. While there are some nice bits (eg Plymouth - Kingsbridge; Exeter - A3052 - Lyme Regis; Bridport - B3157 - Weymouth) it gets horrible once you get to the A35 or A31, and Poole/Bournemouth is feckin awful, as is Southampton onwards.

Plus it's Sunday so the roads will be full of holiday makers and Sunday trippers.

I'd get out of Cornwall (avoid the A38 over the Tamar bridge - but if you do go that way watch out for the new average speed cameras and new 50 mph - although the queues will probably prevent anything over 10 mph) and head over the top of Dartmoor, then Tiverton, Cullompton, Honiton then follow the A30 through Chard, Crewkerne and Yeovil then towards Shaftesbury and Cranborne Chase. Eastwards from there might be a bit boring but someone else might have a better idea.

I've been riding Plymouth to the Dorchester area pretty regularly for around 40+ years, and for the last 6 years it's been my weekly commute. I also worked in Poole for a few years and my parents live in Cornwall so that part of the South coast is kind of my stomping ground!

The A30 from where it splits off from the A303 after Honiton through Chard and Crewkerne and then through Maiden Newton to Dorchester is my favourite way to avoid the A35 in Dorset as it's always dead quiet even in the depths of summer and there's some really nice bits of road along it.

M27 has big stretches of Average speed cams,

The coastal routes are longwinded , i'd avoid

Basically M27 A27 and then you can either drop onto the A259, and wend your way from Chichester to worthing on the old road

or run down the A27 and drop into Worthing that way

The A38 Plymouth - Exeter is also fairly heavily policed & monitored, especially the Western end. Not unusual for police or highway agency cars to slow traffic at times. Mind you this section is well known for loads of accidents so probably justified.

From Southampton you can take the A272 deep into East Sussex - stunning roads, Hampshire side policed, Sussex side less so… Petworth / Midhurst all on route…
