Corrosion on GSA 08 Panniers

Same problem

Panniers corroded badly on my last GSA after only a couple of months summer use. I sent numerous emails to BMW before finally going down the route of a small claims action, effectively threatening to sue the dealer. After much ado, they were eventually replaced as a 'goodwill gesture'.

Looking at the touratech panniers (ones used on Long Way Down) Would they be as effected by corrosion and the like because they look a better build but don't look as good in my opinion?

Yes they are affected just the same being bare aluminium.

The TT Zega panniers are not better built than the BMW ones. If you look inside your panniers you will see a little Touratech label. ;)

TT panniers

I trhink TT panniers are coated with somthing mine have had a lot and I mean have the scars and pop rivets to prove it! but no corrosion and they've been through a lot. Glad I'm not the only sad sack on here on christmas
day!!, stuill Happy Christmas!
Ho, f...,HO.

The standard GS-A panniers are made by TT.

If you go for any other`s make sure they are anodised.

Loads on the market but quality can differ. Zega and MM are like biscuit tins, Caja Sahal are good but heavy, ARD cases and Verns are solid , hand built by Tossers to spec and are the best. All my opinion of course:thumb

I hate Christmas as well so you aren`t alone Dave;)

The Yam looks great PH, I did a similar thing myself with an old CB125, but it never lasts, even once you laquor it you'll be lucky if it stays as shiny for much more than a year

Its been said before here, the BM panniers just dont look right polished... if you are seriously thinking about it, I'd do the inside of one of the lids and see what its like after a short time of use. you're going to get scuff marks getting on and off and just through general use - and the only way I can see that you'll do a complete job one the panniers is to remove all the plastics etc before you polish them - do that and you'll invalidate any warranty :(

dont mean to poo poo the idea, i felt the same as you, but wouldnt want you to waste a load of money...

Here's the answer,

We all accept, that the dull and corroded finish is character building "patina" and poo poo those people with clean shiny boxes as newbies!

Mmmm I'll watch out for my RD forks and see what happens. They were not lacquered for that reason. I keep them polished as much as possible. Regarding my GSA panniers, well thanks for the heads up, seems like the general consensus is to leave them - not my idea of fun but I might have to live with it it seems! When I meant polished I meant buffed really to help keep the rough metal look - polished usually implies shiny!
