Corrosion - on your own!

Why don't you tell them that you want a new bike with a BMW UK & Dealer contribution thrown in?

They're likely to get it right sooner or later

I have suggested that to the support guys as an option. I know that other members of the forum have had some luck with complete replacement bikes but my bike is over 6 months old so falls outside the Sale of Goods guidelines on "burden of proof". Basically its up to me to prove that the bike was "not fit for purpose" when it was sold to me rather that the dealer proving it WAS fit for purpose at the point of sale.

The dealer has ordered the parts for me so I need to decide whether to go ahead with the repairs and negotiate a warranty extension afterwards or hold my ground and get something from BMW first. I suspect that once I allow repairs to go ahead I will have very little recourse!!

I know more than one person who has successfully negotiated themselves on to a new bike in exchange for a used one that is more than 12 months old but you have to have both BMW and your dealer on side first :D

It's not about it being "fit for purpose" it's about it being of merchandisable quality. It's clear from many of the threads on here that the manufacturer has had issues with the paint/powdercoat process of various components on the LC. That is a fact that they cannot escape from. It's not about he who shouts loudest. It's about he who goes about it in the most appropriate way :thumby:

I totally agree and I have been very factual, not emotional, in all my correspondence to BMW. The issue for us folk in NI is that the local dealership are not particularly helpful in these matters, or indeed any other matters. This is not the place to air grievances with a specific dealership but anyone from this neck of the woods will know what I mean :D

I have had a 5 bmw' s and all have been mainly corrosion free , however I have just sold my LC ADV and bought another TC with 2,800 miles on 2.5 years old and the front cover is bad. It is in for a service on Friday so going to ask dealer to put a "goodwill" request ... See how I go !!

Interesting.......Any reason why you went to a TC?

I see a few people purchasing the earlier incarnation of the 1200, DingDong for one

I think the TC is the best of the earlier 1200's (JayC might also agree too:D)

Still not wholly convinced with the new WC, even the performance gain on the old air/oil cooled 1200's, has been eclipsed substantially by the likes of Ducati's MS, the Triumph Explorer and KTM's 1190, in terms of BHP and possibly a more exciting ride perhaps

So where does that leave the WC GS?

Somewhere in the fast approaching redundant middle ground?

Can BMW squeeze more than 125bhp out of the WC engine?

Can they get near 150-160 bhp?

If they can't, then the GS is a bit stuck and the future in the Adv class will need the 4cyclinder S1000 motor in the new S1000F to keep up sales with the leaders of the Hyper Adv bikes - where the leaders like Ducati/Triumph and KTM will be waiting for them as a shaft driven bike (BMW's heritage) will be obsolete

JB - you worry to much :comfort

Not worrying.................just musing and pondering, that's all

Go on then - the WC GS and GSA are outselling every other "Adventure" style bike by a country mile despite already giving away a significant amount of power to the 1190 KTM, Multistrada and 1200 Explorer. Clearly having more horse power is not affecting the buying decisions of most buyers at the moment.

There are those of course who think that 125 BHP is too much for an Adventure bike - there are even those who think that 85BHP gives them the perfect bike

You'll have to 'talk' to yourself on that one, seeing as you own a Scrambler, which is definitely more about what the bike does for you, not how much bhp it has:D

I would have thought so.

Johnny , I sold a couple of bikes one being the WC as I bought a holiday place so I need some money and thought I would give biking a rest for a while ...... Lasted 2 weeks an was offered a TC at handy money .... Oops !!!

The TC feels slow in comparison to the WC and I miss some of the gizmo's , but the TC rides brilliantly anyway and I had forgot just how good the TC box is and how bad the WC box is in comparison !

Biking............you can 'check out, but never leave'

Enjoy it

That looks lovely, i'm tempted by TC's

They're a great looking and handling bike

Their using water based paint on WC models it comes off after too many washes :D long live the hexhead

Agree entirely - it's all about enjoying bikes for what they are and ridding whichever one you are in mood to ride at the time :beerjug:

Talking of TC's they are still very good bikes and I would probably have still had my Triple Black had it not been written off. Also very good value if you avoid the TB and Ralley special editions ;)

This isn't just a wc thing though is it. My 58 plate tc rotted to death... All over it was horrendous. My k1200s also had corrosion issues. Bmw clearly aren't learning from it. My k12 was an '07 plate. Both bikes were well looked after and acf 50'd.
I've now just resigned myself to the fact they corrode. Not good at all and very frustrating.
I've not seen bmws corroding on the 1150 era and 1100 though.

r1200gsa wc nice sports bike ,overly harsh esa suspension, not that good a box and some poor bits of finish and cheap fittings
r1200gsa tc slower but much nicer bike to ride at slow and sensible speeds and better finished

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. My bike is under 1 year old and pretty immaculate as I'm a bit of a nerd about garaging, washing and applying ACF-50. I have been offered new engine, gearbox and driveshaft to replace the corroded parts but I'm also in a "discussion" with BMW customer support about what happens if the new parts corrode within a year - or just outside my warranty period.

Before the usual slagging starts.... I love my bike, and yes I actually ride it, no it doesn't just go to Tescos on a Saturday, etc. However - I think a £14k bike should not be corroding within a matter of months.

I had a 1992 CBR600 before I moved to my 1st GS and it never rusted despite being ridden through NI winters and left out in the rain (before I owned a garage) .

Go back to Honda. I must admit the finish on the VFR 1200 & new VFR800 is top draw.
