Corrosion

Come on spill the beans, what's BMW's very professional opinion?

More than happy to go "public" once it's resolved. Negotiations still in progress.

Bike 7 weeks old and starting to show signs of corrosion on the l/h cylinder to head joint. Showed it to the dealer and asked them to log it as a potential problem in case it gets worse.
One thing he said was don't ever wash it with Muck Off?
I'm amazed anybody can make light of this corrosion and suggest its perfectly normal.
My car has a 7 year corrosion warranty, some have more. I know of a Toyota Prius driver who had all 4 wheels changed at 18 months old without asking, the dealer saw blisters and said it should not happen at that age. That's the car world in the 21st century.
The old bike engine paint corroded and flaked, so have BMW used a different coating or applied some new technology --- No.
Seems we are quite happy to accept a poor finish.

Toyota called my Van in, just before the end of the 3 year warranty period for inspection

They replaced 4 bolts from the grill for corrosion, a rear door hinge and the passenger seatbelt (as it was not recoiling at the factory standard rate)

That's a similar story to my experience

However with BMW bikes, you have to wash them after every leisure ride to keep on top of them and/or cover with ACF50

BMW own Rolls Royce, I bet they don't get such rapid corrosion on the car wheels even if they drive on salted roads and never wash them.

Dim Witt ..!! Didn't even think where the 5000 miles takes you. .try Morrocco. Stelvio, Garmisch. Wonder where you get to. The local bike cafe?

Yeah, just the local cafe and only on a sunny sunday but if you really want to start a "where's my bike been when it's not sitting in the garage on an optimate", I'll see your Morocco and raise you Prudhoe Bay Alaska.......4 times:D Dim wit ;)

Oh, welcome to the site:thumb2

I'll be ordering a WC shortly and will have to do the same job so I'll do the same as I've always done. Liberal dosing of Halfords maintainence spray (thicker than WD40) after a ride and if corrosion happens, I'll get it sorted myself.

I'm not sticking up for BMW, however I reckon that there is no car out there that has no corrosion on it after a British winter. There will be plenty of corrosion on the edges of various items all neatly hidden underneath that car, unfortunately GS's are completely open and therefore you can easily see pretty much everything including any tiny bits of corrosion. I suggest that if it bothers people so much then maybe a bike that has lots of plastic panels covering all those parts that might corrode might be a better answer. Just a thought...!!

Yep. I'm the OP. Seems there's quite a few like this but of course BM state it's the first they've heard about it. Anyhows, a new engine will sort it (for a few months).
