Corrosion

Yep. I'm the OP. Seems there's quite a few like this but of course BM state it's the first they've heard about it. Anyhows, a new engine will sort it (for a few months).

Itll sort it short term, but then youll be back at square one.

I would have said a very fair conclusion, fair to yourself as the owner & also to the dealer.. After all who's gonna want to take in a blistery engine come trade in time..
Suggest take extra precautions next time, I've been using wd40 & acf on mine since your original posting.. :beerjug:

Somehow even if you take all the precotiuns , bad workmanship or just plain engineering issues is the problem.

I've got some good photos of some (minor) corrosion to some RT's at work... I'll post later!

sealant. they dont use gaskets

First pic next to the sealant, the paint is lifted.
Second pic , the hole ( there is a nut in the midle ) was machined after the engine was painted . There is bare Al in front of that hole:blast

Mines the same by the starter. Strangely enough the "bare" Ali shows no signs of corrosion at all. All the corrosion is from under the paintwork ;-(

Mine has that. I assumed, despite it being crap, that "they're all like that..."

Do you use wd40 on the engine? And does it not burn off?

Yes I spray wd40 on the engine & the exhausts at the end of most rides when I can, it keeps the exhausts shiney (ish) but does burn off when exhausts get really hot.
It attracts road dirt over time but a good deep clean is rewarding anyway..

These are from an '09 RT used in all weather, never ever treated with acf 50 or anything else...

I've seen dealer demo bikes getting washed with 'truck wash' or equivalent, which cleans brill & super quick, but eventually destroys the pigment in paint & plastic, discolours alloy wheels (bleaches) & the wheel nuts & chromed covers seem to rust sooner rather than later..
I had a look at a local dealers demo bike as an option to purchase, but no way, bought new & am looking after it..

I see your from Derby, there was a guy at MFN on Monday who was advertising dry & wet sand/bead/glass refinishing, brought samples, very good finish & the RT could look like new again with not too much effort..
If anyone is interested I'll dig out his business card..

Yes please. Would be handy to have his details for my other bike.

Well good going for the OP.... It is results like this that will make the factory consider the paint process a little closer so all our next bikes are likely to be a little better quality.

Don't bank on it

It's been the same for years

Definitely not the first, my mates GS got corrosion bad on the crankcases etc, they gave him a new engine a few months ago. But it wasn't just a replacement engine, it was a pallet of parts, new crankcases, front cover, rocker covers, some internals that they have to change when replacing crank cases etc. they stripped the engine and rebuilt it with with the new parts. You would have thought it would have been more cost effective just to drop in a complete new engine!

Bike back today after new engine installation. All appears good.
Discussed a deal on a new 2014 bike and got carried away so that arrives next week :-)

Well, today I said goodbye to my 2013LC after it's engine exchange and hello to a new 2014 LC. First impressions are favourable. Can't beat that new bike feeling :-)

Just found this on my left cylinder. NOT happy!

Mine has done exactly the same, I am not happy either! The bike is 7 months old what will it look like when it's 2 or 3 ? This is not acceptable IMO
