Crazy Price Norton Commando PCP Deal

First ride tmoz for me.

Tax from the 1st.

Never had anything like this before.

The front end is gorgeous, probably one of the best looking of all time IMO.

Looks good from behind too, giggity.

First 120 miles done on the Norton. Like it. Very versatile bike. Happy chugging around using the torque. But also really chuckable and lively if you give it some.

Riding position / comfort seems fine to me.

Did 100 miles before fuel light came on, took 11.5 litres or there abouts to fill it back up.

Bit nippy first thing, but cylinders are good for warming the paws on.

Finally got mine back, after a massive palaver with the dealer, who would not recommend at all. I’m certainly never going back there and I’ll get it serviced at Kraft Horse instead.

Anyway, had a wobble round the block, it sounds fabulous, I doubt if any new bike will ever sound this good. Looks great, suspension, weak point or retro bikes like the T120 and R Nine T is excellent, brakes are excellent.
Seat, well, you can sit on it. Slightly canter forward riding position but still comfortable, gears good and better than I remember from when I rode a Garner era bike.
Handling feels really nice, despite a steering lock worse than my 690!
A bit vibey, a bit ratty, proper old school riding experience.
Great bike.

Did the dealer sort the paintwork issue ?
Yes, it now looks like new, or like it should have done in the first place!

The dealer picked it up a week ago Wednesday, promised to do the work Thursday/Friday then deliver it back.
I was away so didn’t chase till the following Tuesday, left messages then also Wednesday, then found out the bloke dealing with it had gone on holiday!

Someone else promised to find out the status and call me back, and didn’t, and finally after calling lots more times got it back Saturday.

Not once did anyone proactively call me and if I hadn’t pestered them I still wouldn’t have the bike.

I asked the dealer to deliver it back to the detailing studio so we could check it under the lights, but they failed to do that and delivered to my house instead, 3 hrs late.

However, I had a good look over it and all the holograms and swirls look to be gone, all looks very good so the detailed they used looks to have done a good job.

I’ll take it up to the studio in the week for a proper check, and post up some more pics.

I'm obviously glad that you've got your bike sorted but what a runaround eh? - Typical UK 2025 rotten service. The state of the nation and all that.

Enjoy the bike Sir. It's beautiful, an absolute eyeful.... :beerjug:

It’s all well and good having the best suspension you can buy from the factory, but it needs to be set up properly.

I thoroughly recommend John at Alpha Suspension in Morley, Leeds, for anyone in the Yorkshire area. Very knowledgeable retired engineer, biker and ex-racer. Bargain at £40 and I can tell the difference already. Factory settings were way off and not even balanced front/rear and certainly not set for 106kgs of lard 😂

Also noted chain was too tight once I was sat on bike. Now adjusted. Typical Norton design means you can’t get a socket on because of the silencers 😄

John works from home and he will offer Saturday appointments.

I’m gonna book in with him.

Thanks Pythongrun, worth noting. Has anyone else received their bike with the chain too tight, just wondering if I should be onto the dealer to look at this on pdi, which of course they should be doing as a matter of course. I could adjust it but don't think a 100 mile ride home with a tight new chain would be good for it.

Yes, the chain was too tight when it was delivered, I checked in the showroom and it was too tight and asked dealer to check it.
When it was delivered I didn’t think to check the chain as was more concerned about checking the condition of the bike which was immaculate and only 0.4 miles on the clock.
Couldn’t see any chain adjuster alignment marks on the swinging arm so before adjusting it I put a tiny dot of tippex on either side of the swinging arm to mark the position of the adjusters before adjusting for reference. I then adjusted the chain adjusting each side by a 1/4 of a turn until happy with the tension. I then noticed that the gaps between the adjuster and the axle bolts slots were different by nearly 5mm.
So then had to start all over again and adjusted the chain to correct tension ensuring that the gaps both sides were equal. In the picture the nearest white dot on the top of the swinging is where the lefthand adjuster was before I started showing how far out it was.

I’d always check a new bike / bike I don’t know by using a straight edge or string from the back wheel to the front.

You’d be surprised how off swing arm markings can be.

Another 100 mile jaunt.

Really starting to gel with the bike.

I love it. Raucous fun. Big blips as you come down the box. Bit of a jump down from third to second on mine, but no biggy.

Handling is really good. Much better than I thought it would be.

A rich, characterful riding experience.

Has anyone got the chain slack figures, and also any guidance on suspension settings please? The useless manual has neither.

Suspension feels ok, maybe a bit hard on the front but I’d like to know what the recommended solo settings are and have a fiddle

Spoke to my dealer today about this very issue, asked them to check the chain with someone sitting on the bike as part of pdi.
So many times dealers set the tension which becomes way too tight once my not insignificant weight is on the bike.
Not even they knew the correct tension when put on the spot, or rather they could not be bothered to find out over the phone, either way 30-40mm feels about right to me.

A dealer, who retails and services motorcycles, doesn't know when a chain is tensioned correctly !!!??? - FFS.

I would bet that 99% of the OLD BOYS on this web site could tell them. You just 'know'.

Sure the workshop guys know as it's basic stuff really, it's that they could not tell me what Norton recommend. They must have that information somewhere but I would guess that when put on the spot they could not access it while I was on the phone.

In the meantime, I’m thinking ahead to the first service.

Next nearest to me after Southdowns is Krazy Horse in Oxfordshire - anyone got any experience of them?
