My 2001 1150GS (24,000 miles) was feeling a bit squirelly at the back so I checked the wheel free play, which showed movement. I decided to ride it to Bahnstormers but after a couple of miles it was becoming more wobbly and noisy - short story it was then AA Recovered to Bahnstormer...

What they initially thought to be a bearings-related problem has now been diagnosed as failure of the crown wheel itself, broken at the pinion end. That'll be £800 please.

After 24,000 miles am I just unlucky?

Cheers,

Neil.

You were unlucky but it does happen.
Generally symptoms of a rear wheel bearing on the way out are and oil leak and/or free play.
If you can feel the affects whilst riding then I'd guess it's long gone.

A good reason for very regular checks, it takes a second to do.
and the reason I change my bearings every so often:hide

It's your bike/money but in your situation I'd be looking at fitting a used, complete rear drive rather than shelling out £800 for new replacment parts.

Try Motorworks - they're always breaking bikes. They quote £290 for a complete rear drive, subject to availability. You may get one cheaper elsewhere. Whether Bahnstormer would be willing to fit used parts is another matter, but for the price of a day's van hire to collect it and either take it home to do it yourself or take it to an independent specialist you'd still be saving loads.
