Cut out in Tank RH

I may be missing something but does anyone know what this recess in the tank is intended for? Noticed it tonight while cleaning the bike. Rubber strap fitted across the opening. Looks like it would hold a tin of tyre weld no bother, for those flat moments.

and had gotten as far as making the stainless part that locks into the seat mechaniam today. I was going to make a kind of lockable Aluminium suitcase that I could put camping gear into, namely tent, kipmat, pillow, hammock, sleeping bag.
Rather make my own though... with GW Engineering logo....

Not necessary.... Always carry a van with two mechanics and parts to follow (enough to build 3 more GSs from scratch) for all the things that can fail in a trip. Ala Charlie and Ewan, aka Tom and Jerry "adventurer" trips, which needed half an army to cross Mongolia.

They are quite handy as they can carry the luggage + significant others when they get tired.
