Datatool Tracker Problems

Miine was not recovered when stolen. Result was £1,000 increase in insurance at year one, plus extra for the next 4 years.

Anything that reduces the chances of a total loss is worth considering.

I had one fitted as standard on my 2020 GS. Once the free subscription was up I cancelled it as it kept giving false alarms, normally in the early hours and my optimate was always topping the battery up when I went into the garage. I asked the dealer if they wanted me to reconnect it when I traded it in but he said no as they too had been victim of flat batteries on their showroom bikes. They're all fitted in the same place so any bike thief worth their salt will know where it is and how to get at it quickly (which would be a piece if piss with the right battery powered tools) and chuck it over the hedge.

My Bike Trac has never given a false alarm.

Happy to continue to use.

After having my tracker replaced my bike still needed trickle charging when garaged and would struggle to start sometimes, especially when hot (see my “Big pile of dogshit” thread in the 1250 section).

I fitted a Motobatt Hybrid battery and instantly my bike is very much improved, with permanently good voltage much higher than before (about 12.7v versus 11.6v) and the CTEK always instantly shows green if connected and no more battery woes.

I suspect the high standing voltage from the new battery stops the canbus staying open via the tracker. Perhaps the canbus seeing the battery voltage reduced and an accessory attached “thinks” it is connected to a trickle (charger even if it isn’t) and keeps things live instead of shutting down?

Just sat in the dealership now getting Datatool replaced on (approved used) warranty. After a few attempts to get it going with Datatool they emailed me to saf the tracker was malfunctioning and needed replacing. BMW are sorting it out. Even if I decide not to use it, it should be in a working state as it's factory fitted.

Hopefully the newer devices are have improved in the past 4 years 🤞
