De register?

I've just bought a used 550. I cannot register the unit to myself, apparently, until the previous user de registers it from his name.

I've mailed him a couple of times, but still waiting. Is there really nothing I can do?

Also, I understand that I cannot use the v9 software I have for my 2610, so will have to upgrade the v8 which is on the 550, something which I cannot do until I've registered it.

When (if) I get the thing registered, how much is the upgrade? Would I buy this or just a card

Oh, and are these compatible? I don't see Zumo on the lists, just Nuvi? Sorry to seem a numpty, but I just am.

If the other person does not deregister your 550, I don't know if there is any way to get Garmin to accept you are the new owner.

I don't know how the maps on the dvd work. They may give you a code which has to be then entered in MyGarmin.com, which may be a problem if you can't register the 550 in the first place.

However, the SD card should work OK in your 550, as long as they are the NT maps, which they look like they are. Just put the card in and select the maps from a map menu. No need to register your maps or your 550 anywhere.

Am I correct in assuming the DVD gives me mapsource on the PC to aid route planning and the SD card just updates the mapping on the unit??

I'm not sure if the DVD includes the PC program Mapsource.

That's correct.

Have you tried ringing Garmin? When I sold my Quest a few months ago I told the buyer to contact Garmin and inform them he had bought the unit from me, they then sent me an email (using the email addy on record against the Quest) asking if I had sold the unit and who to, on my reply they de-registered me and set-up his new myGarmin account. Maybe they've recently changed the way they do things?

I bought a 2610 off a guy called Dean Gelsthorpe, and 18 months later, when I had to call Garmin about a software problem - discovered that the unit and all the accessories were the procedes of a domestic burglary

Makes a very good doorstop now

Make a print of the receipt you got from eBay when you bought it, and take the device with you to a Garmin dealer (preferably someone who is serious about GPS devices), then ask polity for them to unregister it.

Otherwise call garmin support, they are quite helpful.

Bought off a bike forum, Casper.

Even if you have a receipt for it - it would only sway Garmin if the receipt details matched those held by Garmin.

There is nothing to say that the seller is the same as the registered owner.

I did that first..

When the previous owner deregistered, it all became clear. Garmin were very helpful along the way with another problem I was having with the computer not 'seeing' the device. This was cleared when I eventually loaded Garmin Communicator Plugin.
