Hi guys, advice please,
Bike dead this morn, turn key and everything lights up and working ie horn, indicators, dip beam, full beam, sun roof, teasmaid etc etc..... but when i hit the button not a thing !! No clicking no whurring (apart from brake servo) just bloody nothing !!
Rode through the gales in Scotland on hol last month and never missed a beat, ridden everyday to work since and and never missed starting till this morn.
Any ideas chaps please !!
Standing by with my specialist tools ie WD40 n clean rag.

Silly question, have you checked the kill switch, this happened to me the other day, had me stumped for a little while

Some of the obvious things are often overlooked as you get older!

HTH, or you sort it soon.

Tony :)

My gear indicator plays up sometimes when I start the bike (usually after it's been wet). Consequently, as it thinks it's in gear, it won't start unless the clutch is in and the stands are up.

cheers fellas, kill switch ok, out of gear, side stand up, pulled clutch when starting still nothing, put it in gear then out, gear indicator showing correct gear in display, red mist decending now !!!

Make sure it's in neutral before turning on the ignition.

Check that the sidestand switch isn't covered in crud or has any road debris caught up in it that may make the brain think it's still down.

Just looked at your profile, an 05 GS? If it was under warranty I'd be phoning BMW assist, however do you have breakdown cover on your bike? if so give them a ring and let them diagnose the problem.

Side stand switch cleaned, no joy.
No warrenty only Green Flag and i cant imagine them having any suggestions apart from offering to put it on the flatbed but seeing as i'm at home its not an option, looking like borrowing my mates bike trailer and getting it checked out at RGM.
Thanks for all your help guys, but not being mechanically minded i shall have to resort to the plastic card gulp.
Cheers all

Had a similar fault on mine some time ago, although i could hear the starter relay clicking. The fault was a corroded wire on the bottom of the relay. Linky to the thread.

Hope you get it sorted soon,

Good luck.

Cheers Tony.
ST, i'm gonna get some nosebag and have another go later, I'll take a look at that, cheers again lads.

Check the cut out micro switch on the sun roof - I've known them play up in the past. Otherwise my money's on the battery...........

Update. Highjacked my neighbours son on a visit nextdoor (he's a mechanic) got to the starter motor, bypassed the switch and it fired up no probs, gonna scrounge a meter and double check tomorrow that theres no feed from the switch. Its swathed in kitchen towel and swimming in WD40 now overnight. Will decide tomorrow whats the next step and if i'm up to making it !!
Thanks again chaps for help and support.
Brian

If your mate shorted the starter terminals, it could well be the relay. This was the first thing i tried when mine went :thumb
