Dead spot R1100gs

Hi guys,

I'm a new GS rider and used to Japanese sports bikes. Was a trail bike rider when I was a kid so gone back to my roots.


Anyway, I have a R1100GS bought from Hunts in Manchester its in great nick but when I rode it from Leeds where it was delivered to Newcastle I thought it was running rough. What I mean is if I cruise around 3000rpm it feels occasionally like a brief loss of power, it only happens when cruising. If I accelerate out of it the bike goes no problem. Hunts kindly let BMW Boldon look at it at their cost. BMW said the fuelling was tweaked. So great picked it up today and asked the service supervisor to ask the guy who did it to give his opinion overall of the bike and they said great, very good. But having rode it back from Boldon to Newcastle I still feel this 'rough' patch.


Is there just a dead spot on R1100gs it's 98 year?

Sounds like surging... make sure the valves are spot on and the TB's balanced and that should help things a bit. I could be totally wrong however but it won't hurt if you do!

Sounds like they haven't balanced the throttle bodies correctly. Most dealers never spend the time to do it properly.

I thought it wasn't right its always around 3000-3500rpm probably take it back to BMW because for now I'm not paying. The annoying thing is they can't have test ridden it. Not impressed with BMW Boldon so far.

My 1100gs has a slight cough at 2000rpm on a light throttle.

I've set the rocker end float, set valve cleances, balanced throttles, fitted Splitfire plugs, checked for air leaks at the inlet, new fuel filter, oils, changed socks and generally 'seem to have checked most things that may cause it and about to put some injector cleaner in the tank.
No doubt I'm overlooking something but it seems many 1100s have this slight glitch.

Some have even resorted to fitting old fashioned carbs

You may have to adjust the CO pot a turn or half.

What dope...can't believe I'd forgotten to try that

Just been out for a quick test run, seems fine now and pulls from 1100rpm in 4th with a gentle throttle now.
Fantastic bike, I'm doing CBTs again tomorrow which is a good test..zzzz

Do you mean I may need to adjust the CO pot as well to compensate or only if removing the plug didn't work?
