Dealer Demo Purchase

Would you buy a 1200 which was a dealer demo bike?

Seems some people wouldn't

I did..................it was like new and during its 5 months as a demo had no warranty work done at all

Similarly some people have bought new and had a major failure within 500 mile, necessitating an engine split.............so what was the point of buying new?

At least with a demo, you can check the history of the bike, during use

Is it any different than buying any secondhand 1200

Yep, I most certainly would and have done in the past. Never suffered any difficulties from any of them being a 'demo' bike. In fact, I think they are usually very well prepared and have had any teething problems already sorted. I have no fears over whether they've been run in 'properly' - I lean towards the view that a bit more 'thrashing' (within limits) during a run in period benefits a new engine.

Particularly with a boxer twin!

My first BWM was a year old demo F650 from Prestige and it was a fine bike.....never had any probs with it and if I was going to get another GS I'd be happy with an ex demo as well

Johnny .. it's only in the current economic climate that allowed you to buy a dealer demo at a good discount.

Rewind maybe 1 year and dealer demos were not worth it because you get only a token discount of £300 or so.

Stop being so smug ..
If only the Turkey trip was later in the year .. I wouldn't have paid full price for mine

Nothing wrong with an ex-demo (my Varadero is an ex-demo), you've always got the balance of the warranty remaining just in case anything goes amiss

Two ex-demo BMW's and I'm still happy. Seems a good way to get a decent saving, and you know that it's been looked after by the dealer.

I bought an ex demo 1200GS and had no problems other than those generally reported. The one I bought had already had the famous oil seal failure in the first 100miles of it's life. Nice discount, especially when bought late in the year. Didn't affect the resale value either.

Despite getting the GS from hell when I bought ex demo from Balderston's I would happily buy another.
None of the faults had any bearing on how they had looked after the bike, or the use it had seen as a demo.
Buying ex demo generally gets you as bike with all the toys for a much more reasonable price.

I have heard crap banded around in the past about not buying ex demo cos it will have been ragged everywhere from new.
Personally I think that's rubbish, as for the most part people are actually quite timid if it isn't their bikes whilst they get used to it.
I think the average ex demo would have had an easier time than a lot of second hand bikes out there, with the added bonus it got regularly looked over by the dealer mechs.

IF you get the right price, they are a good buy.

I'd aggree with that, plus the fact that most dealers get you to sign a £1000 excess form! - focusses the mind a tadge!
