DECATING a BMW R1200GS, I DID IT

This is what is left inside, your looking at the inlet, straight through.this is an 04 silencer thats why it is flat on one side to accomadate some sort of damper valve,my 05 has'nt got this and the inlet pipe is round.

I LOVES IT I DO

I have now done 2.5k miles with the straight through exhaust and I love it,great sound, spins up quicker,no flat spot at 5.5k revs,no extra fuel being used, just fitted a k&n filter and feels like a bit more torque at the bottom end:bounce1.

havnt looked at the plugs yet but I just did a big trip to Cheste for the moto GP and it ran sweet so I think its fine.:clap

:nenau just one small question...............why??:nenau

Aaaaaah, yes, the WHY question - the question I hate ...

... I suppose it would be the same answer to the WHYs I was asked when: -

I replaced the CAT with a Y-piece.

I replaced the end can with a Remus.

I replaced the lights with HIDs.

I replaced the rear lights with LEDs.

Oh dear - the list goes on ...

It's that eternal question - and as a GS owner, I could never answer WHY!

That said, even though I don't own a 1200 :augie , I find the whole thing very interesting ... is all that crap really in there just to 'clean' the emissions?

Nick

If I have to explain, then you wouldn't understand.............. :augie

Try me:nenau the amount of people on this site moaning about how much these overpriced, unreliable, uncomfortable, badly designed old heavy pieces of c**p are and then decide to hacksaw them up and try to get them to go a little faster, just buy a faster, cheaper and far more reliable jap bike and be done with it,
rant over

awaiting further explaination:hide:hide

won't it be running rather lean now...

surely the ecu can't compensate fully for the improved air flow? Without a remap its pointless surely and could cause your engine to run lean....could be an expensive mod:nenau

:D You may have a point - but for me, it was never about speed - just the SOUND! My lovely looking R1100S BoxerCup Replika was the same - looked great but sounded like a slightly manic sewing machine :( !

I had to have mine sound better than standard! Sad, perhaps, but each to his own :drool

Nothing wrong with that I hope you enjoy it. Part of having a bike is the sound etc which contributes to some of the owning pleasure. Interesting post I wondered what they had in them and how it was made.

Mike - look at the number of postings on your last post :D

If they really are that bad, then why ride them? BMW haven't made the perfect bike yet, so if I can justify it to myself, then what is your problem? If I choose to ride a German built flat twin or a Japanese made straight four, then it is up to me if I leave it stock or cover it with bling.

I reckon that anything from changing the screen to gutting the cat and silencer or fitting great big f*ck off alloy panniers and fitting 17" wheels is fine in my book. One man's meat, etc.

Thankfully, we still live in a land where we have the right to express ourselves in different ways and modifying our chosen bikes is still an option, whether is is changing the colour or involutarily, by throwing them down some muddy and rocky track.

It's all about personal choice mate :beerjug:

Refering too my rant, I was moaning about the people who moan about the "cr*p", I ride one because I like it, if it goes wrong just get it fixed and carry on. I've had bikes in the past that havent performed, broke down or have not come up to my expectations, so I simply got rid of them and bought something else:nenau not joined a forum and slagged them off:nenau. As for modifiying don't start me on that subject, as my credit cards will tell you, from the smallest bolt to complete paint job and everything and I mean everything in between, I love to mod my bikes.

I'm sorry about this rant already..........I blame a really bad case of man flu:(

Silencer

I bought a spare silencer on ebay the other day for a bargain £20.00,i have cut the ends off the same as Bluebird, but i have removed everything except the perforated pipe that runs almost the length of the can.I don`t have facilities to weld stainless, so i brazed the end caps back on.Sounds like a proper twin now,if i can find a set of downpipes i will probably try to decat them:thumb2

Standard can

I went for a ride today, first one since modifying my spare can.It seems to rev and pull cleaner from low revs, sounds brilliant, with a nice popping on the overrun,if you just ride on a gentle throttle it sounds quite civilised and subtle, once you crack the throttle open it sounds wonderful, don`t think i`ll bother taking out the Cat i`m quite happy as it is at the moment:bounce1:bounce1

Hi bluebird, just a question, did you connect the lambda sensor back to the exhaust pipe after remove the catalytic??? any difference???

Regards...
