Right......its started getting colder........I'm sure we've been here before (probably last winter) but what improvements have people made to '09 GSA handguards ?

I changed my '08 GSA to a '09 one in May......not out of choice, but because a Lexus 4x4 bent the '08 and wrote it off....on the M4....

Now - whilst the new '09 handguards look nice - they only do what they say on the tin i.e. guard the hands and not provide much in the way of 'stopping the hands freezing into ice blocks and dropping off'. Now I realise they are only supposed to do the former but I'd quite like them to do the latter also..

I'm assuming they changed the design to prevent the '08 hand-guards from operating the clutch or (more importantly) the brake lever when hit/knocked out of true ?

The problem I seem to get is the tips of my fingers, not the hand. I guess the air flows under the handguard and catches the end of the fingers as they point backwards, folded around the grips ?

So.....anything 'after-market' ? I remember seeing a couple of cardboard additions to the grips but I ride >100miles/day and in any condition - so they need to withstand the whole winter - not just the first week. Whilst the 'mitts' might be the most effective.......there not as pleasing to the eye (sorry....I'd like the best of both worlds :) )

Any piccies people could post would be appreciated.....

Yes......I know we have a search facility......but thought the time of year might be good to have all ideas in one place ?

I am currently working on a 'short' neoprene cover for my '09 handguards for the same reasons as you - mitts/muffs too big/ look shite and nothing currently seems to be out there as an alternative. It's a way off being finished but if I make headway I'll let you know. In the meantime if you come up with anything, do share!

Muffs - I am sure you do not need a picture.

Your right, being a Northerner - the word 'Muff' instantly brings images to mind.......not sure how they'd look on the bike though.......or keeping them on there...

:)

Muffs are the way to go. If you want to nip across to Great Milton, I can show you. They allow me to use Summer gloves all year around. Don't look that bad and once used they are the only option!:)

Anyway I thought Thame was Oxon (close to the border though).

You're right, it is Oxon, I'm in a little village 'near' Thame......thought I'd put a 'rough' location down ;)

I'm out of contract from Friday - so have bugger all to do next week so might well take you up on your 'muff inspection' offer !

is this a private party, or can anyone come to inspect MUFFS !!!!!! YES please!!:D

Get the BMW larger top sections of the handguards. - they are a lot bigger than the std items.

Put your hand inside a warm and furry Muff on a cold winters day and you'll be a convert.:thumb

Got the bigger guards on my 09 GSA. they seemed to do a pretty good job last winter.:thumb

The larger guards look the part, how much were they from BMW please. Also noticed you are running with a Vario topbox, is that with GSA panniers or Varios? Just about to try this combination.

Cant tell you how much, as they were fitted as a now cost option when bought the bike. sorry.

I fitted my Vario boxes from my previous GS to the GSA. I think you may need to do a few mods if want to fit the Vario top box with the GSA alloy panniers though.

Just ordered some BMW extentions for my 07 GS. Approx £13 per handguard so £26 for the pair. Touratech equivalent are £25 from Nippy Norman. Much of a muchness really.

me to

I have an 05 1200 with the touratit upper extentions I ride all winter with my summer gloves and a pair of cheap tight fitting wool gloves underneath,They do the job fine except that my finger tips get cold where they seem to be out in the air stream under neath.

What is needed is a lower extention to the guard just like the top.

muffs are not an option coz of standing up,
sometimes i ride one handed,
they look shite,
but mainly its the accesabilty to the bars that muffs hinder.
