... on my computer. I've tried pressing the button on the front, selecting Eject and also poking a paper clip into the the little hole in/under the disc drawer. The green diode lights up and there's a little whirring noise but it doesn't open. It plays the CD that's inside no bother.

So is it phukked?

The little hole on the front (on most drives anyway) is to release the lock on the drawer so that you can then prize the drive open manually - just confirming you are not using a paperclip and expecting it to open for you...

It is designed to release the tray when the power is missing.

Other than that it does sound a tad nagered

Could just be an application "hanging on" to the disc?

You should be able to shut the drive down in System in the Control panel - then try again?

Alternatively, just pop the drive open with a slim knife/credit card and see if next time - it opens using the button/paperclip hole?

A new drive will cost you buttons, though.

Once you've pushed the paper clip in AND opened it up with a knife (power off, obviously:blast:blast) check the little rubber bands in the eject mechanism (peer through the opened flap).......they're only ikkle and I've had one ping off before now.

As above, it's cheaper to get a new drive than piss about trying to fix a dodgy one.......while you're at it, you could upgrade it to a dvd writer or even blu-ray jobby (whatever they are :nenau)

Well, that was decidedly odd. I tried it again a couple of times and the drawer came out half way and snapped back in again before I'd fully realized. It did it again but with a slight pause before closing, then the third time it opened fully, well, not quite fully because there wasn't enough room because there was one of the speakers in its way. I moved that and it briefly opened fully before snapping closed again. The little bugger was taking the p*ss, obviously. It's been OK ever since. :nenau

Oh, and a blu-ray jobby?

Jobby I understand of course (quite familiar with those:P) but blu-ray jobby?

Apparently the latest winner in next-generation dvd battle similar to that of the betamax/VHS battle from years back ......something to do with very high capacity storage dvd's , but it doesn't appear to have sunk down to my level yet :nenau

(ask a yoof like Y2Vlade- he'll probably know all about them :blast)

Have you tried opening 'My computer' then right click on the CD drive and selecting 'Eject' it sometimes works if there is something running on the system that is using the disc.:nenau

Well, everything was hunky dory after that, but when I tried it today it wouldn't open again. So I tried poking it with the straightened-out paperclip and the penknife blade- nothing like having the right tools for the job, is there- :augie and although there was something stirring inside the drawer still wouldn't open.

So as Dickieboy suggested I opened 'My computer', but lo and behold there was no sign of CD drive in the Devices with Removable Storage section. Does that mean that the computer isn't seeing my CD drive?

Any suggestions, please?
