Hi Y'all,

I need to disconnect the battery on the GS to fit an accessory, when I re-connect do I have to "synchronise the throttle bodies"?? If so - how - if not, I'll carry on accessorising.

(ps tried to track down a thread on the subject but me attention span has reduced with the passing years).

Luckily you don't have to sync the throttle bodies, only the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). When you've reconnected the battery, turn the ignition on, open and close the throttle fully three times, then switch the bike off. Job done.

I've always opened the throttle fully twice with ignition on then started the engine? Worked every time for me. Hay ho. :hide

Disconnected my battery alot of times with wiring in various bits and being away often for months with work, never done anything other than reconnect the charged battery, start up and ride off. Iraq was nearly 7months and didn't need to sync anything.:nenau

Me too......Battery disconnected plenty of times.....Reconnect, and off you go......:)

Likewise - I disconnected the battery loads of times without doing the throttle thingy then I read the manual and started doing it - it made no difference...

I guess if the default position / range of the TPS is fairly close, you shouldn't notice the difference. Probably depends how long you disconnect the battery for as well.

Some bikes have major problems with resetting of the TPS i.e. Buells.

My manual is still wrapped in plastic some where???
This was news for me as well, maybe i should consider to actually read the bloody thing :thedummy

Iv'e done a lot of mods on the bike, changing batteries etc.
Newer had a problem.
+ my bike haven't been uppdatet from the dealer sense august 2006.
No problem at all.
The only problem iv'e had on my 06 GSA, is the lack of quality on the crappy Wunderlich plastic parts :blast

Here's the Factory Low Down!

If you have disconnected your battery or the battery has gone flat?

Reconnect positive first Negative last

Secure fastenings and straps

Turn on ignition

Wait for self checks to complete

Twist throttle slowly from fully closed to fully open twice try and maintain a linear speed

This "teaches" the ECU that max and min limits of the T.P.S. and the variables in between those values

That was the instrucions I recieved as a Technician assembling the first 1200 GS into N I

Nuff Said :aidan:aidan:aidan

I think the ECU learns the TPS when you ride so the reset procedure is just an initial stab at calibration. Sometimes I do it after reconnecting the battery sometimes I forget and I can't say I've ever noticed any difference; it's going to be pinned to the stop soon after stting off anyway:rolleyes:

Just like most any modern day vehicle with a throttle position sensor (which is most everything) the BMS-K module will learn the entire range over time, assuming you occasionally go full throttle, but the manual procedure speeds up the process.

So how does it do that then? It doesn't make sense that it 'learns as it goes along'

I don't remember my bike going 'Ooo - I think that's full throttle - oh no - there's a bit more to come yet - actually, it's only open a bit'.......

Why Bother???

If Messr's BMW write a workshop Manual that Tells "Us" the BMW Technicains in a BMW workshop to:- Connect battery, switch on the ignition and twist the grip twice slowly, so that the ECU can learn throttle parameters??

I mean fer feck sake it's twist the grip twice before you start the engine after having a low or zero voltage situation????

Whats the feckin Problem with doing that????

Feck! feck! Feck! Why is it Sooooo Bloody Hard!!!!! :thedummy :thedummy :thedummy
