Disconnecting fuel line

Guys,

On my 850gs, I haven't been able to disconnect (pull apart) the high pressure fuel line under the tank (prior to removing the tank). I found I could remove the low pressure pipe by twisting it and then pulling it but the high pressure pipe just won't budge. I've tried pushing it off with a screw driver but not even that will work.
So how is it done? What has caused it to stick? Can anything be applied before re-assembly to stop it happening again?
Plus .... The end of the fuel pipe shows cracking on the inner surface. Is this normal or should the pipes be changed?

The reason for wanting to remove the tank is to drain water out of it. I tried siphoning it out but can only get the siphon to go to one point in the tank and that's not the lowest point. The filler has a flange, which I guess is there to force the fuel to the pump side first when filling, and this restricts access to the whole of the left side.

Hi Simon and welcome,
The R850gs is the same set up as my 1100,
the fuel pipes can but a bit hard to get off
I cut mine and fitted new pipes and also
quick release conectors, i think nippy norman
do them and so do halfords makes it all easier
the next time getting the tank off, you will also have to
replace the clips holding the fuel pipes as from
memory bmw use crimp ones.

Fuel pipes.

welcom to the land of the totally commited (and those ho karnt spel), what ever you do get a pair of q.d. connectors. These are a bit pricey at £19.00
each at halfors, but they trnasform taking of the tank fro m a pain to an abslolute doddle. You will require new clips so get the screw type or jublilee clips these connectors will transform your life.

Thanks to The Celt and DaveGS for their advice.

I bought the couplings from Halfords and fitted them. £40+ to remove the tank seems pricey but then I spent several hours trying to prize it off as per the manual and got now where.
Having removed the tank, I'm surprised at how heavy it is and how light the bike felt (just pushing it around) without it. It was also annoying to see just how much petrol gets stuck on the left side of the tank. I think Subaru do a jet/venturi/vacuum pump for their saddle tanks but I've never seen one. Anyone know how big this is and if it can be fitted? (I've seen the web page where someone made their own venturi pump but I don't fancy doing that.)

PS I tried using the petrol pump to empty the tank but it cut out almost immediately. I guess this is safety feature to ensure petrol isn't pumped when the line breaks.

I'm glad that we could be of some assistance, I know it seems a lot of dosh
but if and when you send it to your local friendly BMW dealers for a service
you will problably save that saving them time. Having just put back my baglux tank cover it strikes me that those who have one and use the aforementioned dealer it might be a good idea to take it off if the fuel filter is due for changing, removal and re-fitting of these covers is a pain.

You can also get suitable stainless steel QD couplings from a lot of places that do hydraulic components (One on any industrial estate anywhere, 'cos they supply bits for diggers and trucks and stuff)

Just make sure they have petrol proof rings (silicone or whatever) and the ID is correct (6mm IIRC)

Bizarrely, SS ones are cheaper than the nylon ones that Halfords and BWM do :nenau

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I would like confirmation on some of the info and this is probably the easiest way

FT-LCD170-06 £12.75 3/8" ID hose barb, In-line, 2.00" Length, Shutoff, Coupling body 1/4" flow

FT-LCD220-06 £7.90 3/8" ID, Hose barb, Straights, 1.35" LC Length, 1.68" LCD Length, Shutoff, Insert 1/4" flow

OK I got the information (above) from the recommended web site and the coupling part numbers. The trouble is the part numbers refer to 3/8 hose tails! Now I thought and read that the fuel pipes on my GS1100 were 8mm ID, so that would mean these couplings would be too big and I would need 5/16 hose tails??

Could somebody who has done this mod confirm the sizes I need. I thing it should be... Hose barbs to suit 7.9/8mm ID pipe and a minimum of 6mm bore through the connector/coupling?

I carry two M8 SS bolts in my tool tray for emergency tank removal - just jam 'em in :)

So think that may b ethe required ID.
 
sorry Nasty, only just picked this thead up again. to be honest i'm not sure what size the pipe-work is, however the company who sells them, and by the way(omega. com are cheaper), have various barb sizes. does your rubber pipe connect to the hard plastic:nenau, if it does try measuring the hard plastic part to get an idea of what size you need. just a thought.
