So I'm just looking to give the bike a really good service and was wondering what peoples experience and opinions of the after market filters. I've seen the Hi-Flo brand of filters around on eBay but its not a brand I'm familiar with. When I service my own car's I do tend to use genuine or the OEM manufacturers as I remember reading some trade articles years ago about the lack of things like non-return valves installed to some of the cheaper brands so want to make sure I'm not installing shit products.

Also is it worth the extra fitting the iridium spark plugs specifically the NGK DCPR8EIX?

Finally there was some specific information on greases recommended for certain jobs but cannot remember which jobs or types. Got a bit overloaded with info and didn't write them down.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'd stick with the OEM filters as they are cheap enough and designed for the job when all said and done. I've fitted Iridium plugs to mine and am happy with the performance. I really don't know what extra they give but the bike always fires straight up and pulls very nicely. Incidentally, I had trouble starting my old KTM640 a couple of years ago until I fitted an iridium plug which solved the issue so on that experience alone, I got them for my 1200.

As with Bilco, stick with the OEM filters and I have the Iridiums fitted to my 1200GSA as well. Never had an issue with them which is all you can ask for really plus they survived the dyno runs at Hilltop!

OEM filters my arse. :blast

Take a look at who actually MAKES those filters, then buy the identical item with identical flow properties but without the OEM branding, and you'll take 25% off your servicing costs :beerjug:

I think the ONLY item to have ever been cheaper from a BMW dealer than from elsewhere are the final drive bearings.....pretty much everything else, you can get the same for less :thumb2

But isn't that exactly what OEM means? Original Equipment Manufacturers - the same company that makes the 'Genuine' version but with a different sticker?

Yes, but I suspect that the previous posters meant to get the BMW badged ones.

If not, apologies to them for the assumption.

The hard part can be finding who makes the genuine part. On my LR Defender there are definitely items that I would only replace with genuine/OEM and not pattern copies (especially Britpart!). Saying that, my LR radiator failed whilst driving, ended up having to accept a Britpart replacement to get me back on the road the same day. I drove in fear for the first few weeks expecting it to fail, 3 yrs later and its still fine! But given the choice, id have avoided it.

The BMW branded filters (which I always use) are made by Mahle. The prices are the same for either type so I buy from my local Motorrad dealer.

If you're buying after market filters buy Mahle, they make the bmw filters..
Don't buy Hi-Flo.
They body is so thin it seems like it's made from tin, and can twist when trying to get them off. Giving you the potential of wasting a few hours of your life.

I've got my filters from Motorworks for donkeys years both for the K and the GS - always been Mahle that comes through the letter box and I've always considered those OEM. I used to get the same from Motobins before that and for a while they came with a free filter tool as well. Have quite a few of those in the parts bin :thumb

Many thanks for the replies and the info on suppliers. Its good to find out who supplies the original parts.

I had looked at Motorworks but they don't advertise a brand which made me wonder what exactly would turn up.

Give them a ring in the morning and ask them....

I picked up Mahle air and oil filters from my local auto factors and paid less than I could find online.

I first checked they supplied Mahle. They were not in stock but were delivered next day.

Air filters make little difference to power. The only benefit is you can wash the k&n ones and reuse.

The engine only uses about 80% of available air.

For those who believe, no explanation is necessary.

For those who do not, none will suffice
