I need to change my handlebars on the 800GS and was thinking of Renthal Fat Bars, does anyone know if these fit straight into the clamps etc.... ?

The reason is that I store my bike in the Garden and the only access is via the alley between my house and the one next door, now the width of the alley is approx 2" too narrow to let the bike through so I need to take an inch of each end of the bar and shuffle everything down. I don't really want to butcher the original bars so was going to buy a set of either pro tapers or Renthal Fat bars and fit these, hence the question.

It's a bit of a pain but I have had to do this on the last 5 bikes but it's cheaper than moving house

So yes it is need rather than want, but no I have not dropped it you cheeky bugger :-)

OK I decided to bite the bullet and chop one inch off each end of the original bars, pretty simple with just a new hole to drill on the left to hold the switchgear in the new position, however as Greggers says there are Steel threaded inserts in each bar end to allow for the Bar end weights to attach. These threaded inserts are inserted into a threaded hole in the bar and locked in place with thread-lock compound. After sawing the bit of the bar off the end I sawed two extra cuts and split this piece to remove the threaded insert, I then tapped the end of the bar and screwed the threaded insert back in place.

So now the bike can be stored safe and sound away from prying eyes in my shed.
