OK I decided to bite the bullet and chop one inch off each end of the original bars, pretty simple with just a new hole to drill on the left to hold the switchgear in the new position, however as Greggers says there are Steel threaded inserts in each bar end to allow for the Bar end weights to attach. These threaded inserts are inserted into a threaded hole in the bar and locked in place with thread-lock compound. After sawing the bit of the bar off the end I sawed two extra cuts and split this piece to remove the threaded insert, I then tapped the end of the bar and screwed the threaded insert back in place.
So now the bike can be stored safe and sound away from prying eyes in my shed.
