My thanks to Chris (Doc) for arranging the jaunt and, more importantly, giving it an open invitation.
In a TripAdvisor style, where one is the lowest and five is the highest:
Organisation: 5 - Chris went out of his way to make sure I knew where he and the others were when I arrived. Likewise, his booking of my room was spot on. He knows his way around the wine festival, that’s for sure.
Accommodation: 5 - Comfortable and clean. An easy 10 to 15 minutes walk into Cochem. Plenty of parking and Ralph (the owner) is a decent bloke.
Fun: 5 - The festival picks up from its start on Wednesday, becoming really busy on the Friday night. Friday, we all went on the ‘Disco boat’ which was good value at EUR 20 plus drinks. The town’s firework display (the boat arrives as it starts, hanging off on the river to give a good view) is great.
The wine fest: 5 - A good experience and fun. For all the ‘Germany is awash with murderers’ nonsense spouted in the forum’s pub each day, there is little to zero ‘security’. Everyone is there to have a good time, with no trouble. Do many speak English, no. But that doesn’t matter a jot, drink some wine and chat in ‘Gergenglish’.
The town: 5 - Yes it’s touristy but so are most of the towns along the Mosel valley. It’s cheaper than France, that’s for sure.
Company: 5 - Everyone got on, which is all anyone can hope for. The only ‘Let’s all do the river boat on Friday night’ event was the only thing where Doc suggested we all went out together. For the rest, do your own thing or meet up with others. It’s not a huge town, so you are bound to meet up with someone.
Would I do it again: 5 - If you don’t want to ‘Do the festival’ then take a ride / drive out. Take a boat trip. Catch a train. Sit on the square. Sit on the river. Do as much or as little as you like.
Richard
