Doc does London 2025 ( or wants to 🤔 ) - Thursday 13th March - A date for your diary

Or a curry in Kricket, Denman street, Soho

again well within the 5 min walk
Not the usual run of the mill curries. Sit at the bar/counter and watch the food prepared in front of you,
Tandoori Monkfish, Masala kulch - bhel Puri - lamb Haleem- duck kathi roll.
I’m hungry now… :D

My suggestion was the Standard Balti House in Brick Lane. (Post 187) As to the after dinner beer arrangements, I'll have to bow to superior judgement - Steppers / Wappers / Chasmill or whomever.....
Option could be Uber from Brick Lane to The Town of Ramsgate but that's purely an idea.
Defer to higher wisdom on this point.
As soon as we know how many I will ensure The Standard is prepared. So far i have from a previous listing ther following:

Doc
Evskij
NielDD
Grantmac
Oldrat
Monsieur
Wapping
Steptoe?

Just to advise I have spoken to The Standard, Brick Lane and advised we will be +/- 10 people for Thursday 13th
No arrangements made for pub visits before or afterwards.
Table reserved for 1830 and we can stay as long as we want.

Bloody hell that's supper time in Yorkshire 😅
Sounds good Grant. Hopefully a few will want to meet before for a drink.

I’d suggest the Well & Bucket on Bethnal Green Road, for a beer or two before:

I am thinking of a rework of Doc’s possible visit East for the day (I guess on Friday) to include a stop at Manze’s over Tower Bridge. It’ll maybe mean missing out some other bits but I think it’ll be worth it.

I’ll do a trial run (hopefully today, after a haircut) including the river boat from the Thames Barrier, back to either Tower Bridge or London Bridge. kicking off at 10:30’ish from Tower Gateway to catch the DLR, which is running normally.

From London Bridge City Pier, it’s about 20 minutes walk (there’s no direct bus or tube) to Manze’s. Have lunch and then take a bus up to the bottom (south) of Tower Bridge to walk over or skip the bus to just walk back to Tower Bridge and then across the bridge to the Tower of London (it’s not much slower) and carry on from there. Then, I guess the City to finish up at St Paul’s or the Old Bailey….. All in all, quite a good day out, I think.

I also need to refine the separate day’s, ‘Up West’ adventure, especially if Harrod’s is to be on the menu…. And why not, it’s certainly something to see.

Is that for Saturday Richard ?
Itinerary is looking good. Just to see what Steptoe has planned for Friday night if anything and Saturday night although I don't want a mad one Saturday night.
I might be tired.

Yup, up ‘Up West’ on Saturday, if that suits, simply as the City is ‘better’ on a Friday.

Let me know about Soho / Steptoe etc and I’ll make sure you are back in time to put on your Old Compton Street gear :augie

What about a stroll through Ripper and The Twins (they loved their old mum) territory to the Blind Beggar, iconic but a shithole, past the Elephant Man's old house on Whitechapel Road? You're near the tube or DLR too.

Sounds good.
Is there a fee for all the efforts you have put in ? ;)

not being familiar but what's in the pies?
I used to love pie chips and gravy but I don't see it that often anymore anywhere.....

The revised Wander works, bringing in a pie, mash and liquor lunch. I’ve also altered the walk at the east end of the City, to bring in the remains of the original London wall, Algate pump and the smallest sculpture in the UK and (for all I know) the world. Oh, and Postman’s Park and the statue to the inventor of the Penny Black stamp, the world’s first postage stamp…. But not the first postmark, which was (also not far away) years earlier.

8.5 miles since I left home for a haircut on Cable Street at 09:30.

15:30 at the Viaduct Tavern, Old Bailey Central Criminal Court

PS The finest loos are to be found at the Guildhall Art Gallery, City of London. I nipped in to buy a Medieval map of London.

PPS The Guildhall is worth a morning on its own. Strange but true, the library holds the largest collection of books in the world, dedicated to one city. That city is, of course, the Square Mile of the City of London.

Unlike my first recce, the tide was near right out yesterday, just on the change, as you could see that the river’s natural flow (west to east) was reversed, flowing in from the North Sea.

It is hard to show the amount the river reduces by at low tide or the speed it moves at when it’s in full flood. Hopefully these pictures will give a bit of an idea as to how much it falls by. The pontoon down to the RiverTaxi is fixed (hinged) at the land end, rising and falling. When I got off at London Bridge, the river being low, meant that the pontoon’s angle was at about 45 degrees.

By the time I’d had lunch and crisscrossed crossed the City to Southwark Bridge, the river was about two thirds full again.
