Dogbytes' R80 ST project

A couple more shots of Mr. Tunbridge's most excellent paintwork, gracing the rest of the beast...

Glad I went and picked up the bodywork. The electrics panel, under the tank, clears the tank no problem but the coil was hitting it. Fortunately I didn't like the coil bracket anyway - so I've made a new one.

Made the throttle cables today too. I was worried that the throttle would be on the heavy side - my old Moto Guzzi was, but it seems okay. Not as light or fast action as the K1300 S throttle but good enough.

So, first thing on the agenda tomorrow - a new bottle of Argoshield!

On another subject, I nipped out on the 1300, this morning, to get some bits for the project and the guy serving in a local motor factor (near Truro) mentioned that he had an R80 G/S (or GS) fitted with a Moorespeed 1000cc motor, that the previous owner built for, and competed in, the Paris Dakar. Unfortunately there was another customer there and I didn't hang around to get more details. Will try to chase it up, just out of interest.

Spent most of today cutting and squaring burs of exhaust. What with thus and the drilling of the drain plugs for lock-wire, the other week, I can promise you one thing - no more stainless on the next bike! :)

And no, the pipes won't be taped together permanently!

Exhaust is coming on nicely. My pipe welding technique has improved too! It would be handy if I had the kit to purge the pipes properly but I don't - next time...

The down pipes are done and the straights leading in to the Y-piece. Managed to get the headers the same length (taking into account the offset cylinders) AND the correct length according to Richie Moore. Tying up the length from the exit from the Y-piece to the silencer is going to be awkward but it'll get done.

Nice welding

Thanks, it would be nice if they'd all turned out that neat! :)
The problem with stainless is that, unless you can get the shielding gas round the back of the work, you can get impurities/oxidation coming through the weld and it all gets a bit messy. It can get worse with poor quality material. Fortunately this tubing seems pretty good. If I was doing exhausts all the time, I'd set up for it a bit better. Also, in all honesty, I don't do enough welding to get really consistent at it - I can do strong welds but they aren't always the prettiest!

So the headers are the correct length and here they are meeting in the Y-piece. Having stared at them for a while, I think that aesthetically the headers just in front of the Y-piece needs to be inclined upwards to curve around the back of the sump. Bit of a pain but I'll hate it otherwise.

It's the little things. From earlier this week.

Fork drain plugs. Drilled for lock wire, naturally. Can't believe I actually chamfered the holes!

Ah f**k, you have to laugh sometimes. :)

Bike looks great in profile. Seat, tank and fairing look just right. Drilled fasteners look very neat too. It's often the time and care taken over small details that make some custom builds so much better than others.

I think you are right !
