New ZZR1400 £10,250

My 2 year & 5 month excellent example with a few hundred quid of extra's just went for £5300. Almost exactly 50% less.

From what I have seen on the private market most 2008 / 08 1200GS models retain about 60% of new value.

Taking into account the economic environment and a lack of lending to idiots who buy stuff they can't afford combined with a glut of used bikes from the aforementioned idiots the BMW's are not doing too bad.

I blame BMW for many wrongs, the economy is not one of them, it is a buyers market plain and simple, one I have both lost and won on in a single day today.

I lost the first battle, but reckon ended up winning the war.

Trade up not down, or stay put. If you have cash but no bike then buy, if you want cash from a bike don't do it unless your desperate.
 
I bought an ex demo 1200GS from Vines, 3 months old, 1000 miles on the clock.

Never bought a bike from a dealer but this was cheaper than any private bike I had seen - £8500

Did 15,000 in a year then gave it to my brother as a birthday present.

100% depreciation

Nothing wrong with buying new bikes,just DON'T try to trade them in at 2 years old,you'll lose your shirt. If you want to change every 2 years,buy used.If you plan to keep for 4+ years, then go ahead and buy new.
 
Easy sums. It used to be the expectation that a 3 year old car (and probably bike) was worth 40% of it's orig value. When I worked for a dealer if you took your new bike and brought it back the next day you would have seen about 15% difference.

Used bikes were given about a £1500 pound turnaround for anything above £5k. Any more was a bonus, any less than £1K was questions time.

Sadly that is the laws of the jungle and it's a big jungle out there with the motor trade being close to estate agents on th respect chain:augie

I once had a customer who passed away soon after buying a GS. I had to tell his grieving wife that we would buy his low mileage bike back for something like £1750 less than he paid for it. When I moaned to my boss he graphically did the sums to show me why this was so. Absolutely no sentimentality was allowed. I quietly told her to get a family member to sell it privately for about 1/2 the loss.

The worst one i had was a K1200LT which was fitted with every concievable extra available and some more. it was approx £17.5k! He had it on ebay less than 3 years later for less than £8k!! By that time i had "moved on"...

Once you have been on the dark side it all makes a bit more sense. I have a 14 year old 11GS and do all my own work:augie:D

BM's are not as bad as some... Harleys are probably best... Italians are probably worst if you don't count anything Chinese:D Also you have to remember that BMW bikes and cars are now as much "volume" as "prestige".

Trade in price for £15k Ducati Mutistrada anyone...:D:D

That's under £650 per year depreciation!

Buy new by all means, just don't sell!

I have a 1998 R1100RT which I bought in 1999 for £7250. I'm Still riding it.

When you have to resort to personal insults (which are totally unwarranted) it doesn't say much about your argument.

I have owned many bikes over the years and looking back, the only bike I kept for over 2 years was my last bike the Honda Fireblade. I bought that pre-registered out of the crate and saved 2.5k and when buying my current bike the 08 1200 GS, with nearly every extra you can put on it! I saved a packet from new.
It only had 1500 miles on the clock. I still had to run it in. I plan to keep the current GS for quite some time.
You have to buy smart, accept it if you buy new don't expect to sell in a few years time without making a big loss, Keep it longer; enjoy the bike. I have done 4k in 5 months with the GS and loving it, at this rate it will be worthless due to the high mileage but hey I am using it....

Don't forget why you buy a bike in the first place. Enjoy...

Spot on, eay to overlook, I lost nearly £5k on my ZZR in 2.5 years taking into account extra's, but it had taken me to France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, all over the UK and provided a huge amount of fun over 3 summers, add in service costs and fuel and it looks worse, but I would do it all again, though maybe starting with good used example :blast

Other hobbies are no better, we like to do a bit of diving and always rent what my mate calls "crap" gear, but he spent thousands on kit, which he has used half a dozen times in ten years and most of it is out of date, unserviceable or useless now.

My sold bike is also now out of warranty, coming up to a £600 service and just starting to lose the as-new look, and I am sure that warm "new bike" feeling is worth something, so perhaps I will do it again one day?

Exactly, that's why you might as well get out and ride 'cos GS/RT/R's are still OK for more miles than most when it comes to "the book".

My girlie bought a little soft top car a few years ago 2nd hand and it has done very few miles and has had to have a few bits fixed so buggering the £/miles ratio.

This year i bought a VW LWB van for a specific job and may sell soon. I have had to spend little on upkeep and have done plenty of miles. It has done the job and has been a spot on. If I sell at a bit of a loss I am not bothered as it has been good on the £/miles.

The saying is something like " it's not whether it costs but how much it costs you to own".

New = bigger depreciation + some dealer service costs... Used = smaller depreciation + service costs + repairs. Less than £500 a year if you do good miles is usually a "win":thumb2

BMW History....

Bought R1100R from dealer in 1999 = £5500
Sold privately in 2002 = £4900

Bought R1150GS (W reg) privately in 2002 = £5750
Sold in 2006 (in p/ex to dealer) against R1150GS Adv = £5600

Bought GS Adv 1150 in Aug 2006 for £8500
Sold privately in Aug 2008 for £7800.

Bought 2008 GS Adv 1200 from dealer in Jan 2008 for (crikey) £9900
Still got it ............. (but will probably take some hit on it....)

Overall, BMW have been the best bikes I have ever owned for depreciation in >35 years of motorcycling.

However........... now the 1200 is "mass market", well, lets see.

(Ducati Multistrada anyone ?)

It's the resale value a few years down the road that worries me. Ducatis can fall like stones..............

They don't always make good "mature" bikes unless well cared for.

Lovely looking bike, mind you. If a tad smaller than a GS.

If you see them parked alongside, the MS looks like a "mini-me".
 
But for the final drive, could be tempted...:)

I tried a Multistrada 1200 today, never got unruly but felt slightly overpowered for the chassis, cheap switchgear and naff all wind protection, good fun (brutal - felt twice as quick as a GS) but a GS handles much better, is a better balanced package and dishes out the fun at almost legal speeds. Multistrada - Flawed but fun.

I reckon resale will be pretty average on the multistrada compared to ducati hyper bikes or a GS.

They said (at 41,000m) that it had done too many miles for the year & could only offer me £2800 against a new bike. Hey hang on! I thought these bikes were supposed to be used & were good for decent mileages ??? :confused:

Just what is the expected 'book' mileage we are supposed to do per year to attain 'average' depreciation ??

It used to be 8k miles for RT/GS's and about 6 for R's and possibly S's. F65o's used to book at 6k miles, KLT/RS at probably 4 tops and i remember well that Cruisers booked at 1.5k miles!:augie

What happens is as more bikes are sold to the leisure and pleasure brigade and they forget about them while they go out in the caravan/speedboat/yacht/2nd home in the country. hence they do less miles and the "book" mileage comes down. What happens at dealers is that sinse the 1150's came out, sales have moved up dramatically and there are more bikes on the market.

When they have more choice they can forget about stocking in the showroom anything above 20k miles or so. a bike like yours could/would be farmed out to a trader to sell somewhere else or appear on ebay like Rainbow do to sell this extra stock.

Now the 12's are out and owners are less brand loyal and fickle as a teenager in a mobile phone shop, the dealer has a wide range of bikes to pick from.

Your bike would be a great used private sale for about £1.5/2k more than they have offered you:augie

BMW produced their millionth bike in approx 1993 after 70 years of trying. Honda had knocked out 25 mill C50/90's in half the time. I guess they are trying to catch up:D
