i only mentioned it as i had visions of multiple half empty old containers lying around on a shelf somewhere

Dot4 is same for cars and bikes. Different brands have differing boil points and can keep working where the cheep stuff could have boiled, I think you'd have to be into racing to test the theory though.

Why do we not use Dot 5.1? Its less hygroscopic that Dot 4 so less risk of caliper corrosion. Just asking.

In reality - the remaining fluid can only absorb the humidity of the air in the bottle (if top is on) - which in normal UK conditions, will be the thick-end of shag-all.
Once it has done that - and the air in the bottle is dry- that's it!

How much steam can 1 drop of water make? It's a hell of a lot there is a formalua to work it out. I think it's over 20 times the volume of water and enough to kill. It causes vapor lock. JJH

Look, we're not talking about using some old dregs that have been kicking round the back shelf for years, but I've seen guys throw out perfectly good brake fluid in a tightly sealed plastic container thats been open then sealed back up and sat for a couple months.
Its your choice.

Silica gel will probably suck out the moisture but brake fluid isn't silly money.
