Hi need a little help!!
Just had a service at my local dealer and was told that the drive shaft had wear on the drive shaft UJ , there is a noticable clunk at low speed and on lower gear changes, but not every time. Mine is a 2006 1200 GSA with only 11500 miles.
Is this a common fault and does anyone know of or recomend a repairer preferably down south or can this be done by someone with mechanical knoweldge providing the parts are available or is it just a case of stumping up the cash for a new one.:hide

Thanks in advance Phil

Very common, search is your friend.
More info on this subject than you can shake a shitty stick at :)

Ps I'd recommend Mikeyboy but he is midlands based.

Mine does that, maybe I ought to check my UJ's thanks for the info. Prevention is better and cheaper than cure.

I thought it had gotten a little worse than I remembered it being when I rode it last weekend.

Is the shaft a serviceable part ??........any grease nipples on the uj's ??

Really? I hadn't realised it was a common problem? although 11k is very a very low mileage for a UJ to fail :eek

As said, Mikeboy will service them but they are strictly speaking supposed to be unserviceable and no, they don't have grease nipples, they are sealed units.

That's my thoughts as well Andres! I had one fail at 18,000 miles but have not really heard of any others over the years. The bike has now done 98k and no more problems with the UJ! There is a guy in Stourbridge who will fit grease nipples to them and I'm sure he put a thread on here somewhere but I can't find it at the moment.

i can refurb the shafts, the cost is @£130 however i cannot offer any real warranty,i had one shaft where the fd end yoke was distorted and despite my best efforts it was still tight after replacement hence no warranty, this was ONE out of many successfull refurbs.
.one thing to be aware of is to carefully check the splines as these can wear, so before considering u/j replacement remove the shaft and fit it onto the f/d splines, check for a loose fit, if it wobbles "its scrap".
the new u/j's are fitted with grease nipples.

Mine just went at 122k miles, can't complain, started with a slight knocking sound pulling away. Sourced Recon warranty shaft from MotorWorks.

I think that the bike had not realy been used befoe I got it in 2011 as it only had just over 3000 miles on it maybe all that none movement has a little bit to do with it.
Mikeyboy can you give me a turn around time for a refurb please as your price is far more appealing than a replacement shaft. Just wait it won't be long before the F D get noisey knowing my luck already had the outer oil seal replaced :D
Cheers all for your input who said there is just a bunch of Tosser's on this site :aidan

My last GS suffered from the previous owner steaming the living daylights out of the back end, until one day the splines at the drive end gave out, yet the UJ's were fine, I had also noted a clunk, I bought a second hand drive shaft from James Sherlock, it arrived "as new" and at half the cost of a new one, it was a bargain.
i checked my current GS soon after buying it when I changed the diff oil, and greased the splines accordingly.

The later bikes have an oil drain plug in the FD so no need to disconnect the UJ splines to swing the FD over. All very nice but now the FD splines never get greased.

my driveshaft front uj just fell apart at 83k, all the needles from the bearings were inside the swinging arm, the 2 yokes just catching each other, lucky it didn't seize really.

£80 for a as new 1 of e bay.

Im happy enough, I give it some abuse and then some:thumby:

They won't if dealer serviced, another reason to DIY.

I tried a 2011 RT today and compared to my 08 GS the drive train was smoothness itself. OK at 2500 miles the RT wasnt even run in, but changing gear did not bring the bangs and jerks that it does on my GS. Whats more I cant remember this degree of jerkiness on my first gs. So it seems to me likely that I have some slop in the drivertrain - is that what those of you who have had driveshaft problems would recognise?

Happy Camper

Mikeyboy has worked his magic and I am now very pleased with the drive shaft very quiet and smooth still a little clunk but hardly noticeable compared to before just shows up the play on the splines.
So a big Thank You to Mikeyboy for his very fast turn around service, I would recomend him to anyone who requires a drive shaft done.

Thanks again Phil

okaaaaay.

so bike has clunked since I got it (18K, now 25K).

Is there a procedure I can follow to check its all hunky dory (or should that be clunky dory?)...what should I be looking out for (or indeed listening).

I'm reasonably competent and have most tools conceivable..but never had a shaft drive before, so its a bit of learning curve. :rob
