Drive Spline Greasing

Speaking from experience, having thought drive shafts were virtually maintenance free, I now know very different and will be checking my splines on a regular period. Not just the splines, but the gators for any cuts and prevent the failure that I had during the summer.

Jesus Christ this must be a wind up ?

seem like they shaft you

Having worked in aircraft structures for all of my life, there is no way that I would get a drill and a thread cutting tap and make holes in places where BMW don't think a hole is needed.
I am sure that BMW and your insurance company would agree with me.
Totally with you on that thinking.

Just had my FD open to check the gaitor seal (not for the splines, a different reason!). Clean as I left it. I've mentioned it on here before, but the seal does work well if you use Staburags properly and make sure the rigid inserts are clicked home. Obviously if you're fording or off roading properly, I couldn't say if it'll hold, though for the latter I'd expect a yes.

It's not cheap per ml, but as you need next to feck all to seal it, I don't understand why people chose to save a few quid on lesser sealing greases and risk ingress.

If the BMW bean counters agree it's needed, why would you doubt it?

I'm a bit liberal with...which has paid off because I'm out the country right now and lowered the FD to check no water had gotten into it (the gaitor rigid part had somehow unclicked itself slightly separating it from the swingarm - I obviously hadn't pushed it home last time). There was sufficient Staburags around the area for me to re-spread it to get another good seal out of it.

Btw, inside it was all clean and dry! Despite being unclicked and ridden in the rain for 600km.

I should mention I'm talking about a twin cam - not the LC - though the arrangement is the same. Saying that, looking at images of the LC, the gaitor seems to have an improved fitment?

Makes sense to me, I’ve got a 1.2L tin of the Staburags ordered from Germany, going to split it down into 50g containers and sell it on at a sensible price, I inspected the FD end of the driveshaft yesterday and at around 5k miles was clean as a whistle, but the NBU30 almost totally devoid on the rubber bellows.

50g will probably last a life-time.

I bought a jar containing only 10g. It's been used for several years, and it'looks like it's hardly been used.

I think the purpose of the lubrication is tp make the rubber slippery enough to click properly into position only. Draining is taken care of by the gutter-shape of the gaiter. Too much lubrication may make the gutter overflow....

Why not ? BMW are far from perfect , the Servo brakes of 2000-04 were a disaster, not even fully developed, then to tell your customers to shove it when they started failing at a rapid rate , IMO someone should have been jailed for that. Spokes loosening , front forks having to be reinforced , leaking brake callipers , cracking rear flanges , Alloy wheels failing , final drive bearings.
BMW are no different from any other manufacturer, make the product last the warranty period ,after that couldn’t care less.

If you really want to drill a hole in a structurally significant part like a swinging arm then that is your choice. Don't forget to tell your insurance company that you have done it, and your dealer if your bike still has a warranty.

My Staburags has arrived and finished off my final drive job today, got plenty of it, so applied liberally, will split my 1.2 kilo down into smaller amounts in the NEW Year and post it up on here for a good price, for anyone else who wants to do there own, I need to get some small sealable containers, if no takers will do it on Ebay.
(The white stuff is the Staburags:)

so much white is not needed, only very thin amount

Maybe so, as I said , I've got plenty, its purpose is to keep water out, so I don't really think too much is a problem. It's not visible after re assembly and its not likely it will need doing again in a hurry.

Yep, I’m interested in buying a small amount off you !

Above, no problem, need to source some suitable containers, post is the biggest issue, I'm retired , so plenty of time! Will start a FS post in New Year when I'm ready.:)
