Driveshaft failure - with photos

Mine went at 20k. Coming back from Germany in 2008 I felt a slight vibration through the footpegs at about 80mph. I thought it was maybe the rear tyre which was getting low on tread. 30 miles from home and doing 80 ish when a few big bangs and loss of drive:eek:

Still under warranty at the time so got hauled in and fixed with no drama. Dealer said it was the 1st one they had seen. Drive shaft and final drive casing replaced. 50k later and no problems since:thumb

Don't make a drama out of it chaps as it's a rare thing to happen.

Well, you can either bitch and cry like a big girl or just fix it and get on with it:augie

If I recall, the rubber boot had split and we we were in some deep mud. Mind you, the swingarm had just been welded back together which may not have helped and I would bet a pound to a pinch of shit that the tape and cable tie are still on the bike:augie:thumb

Well thats just bloody crap then, if water gets in, then it should have a drainage facility.

There is. See the hole on the underside.

I expect we'll be seeing a few more of these failures now that the rear drive oil can be changed without exposing the UJ. Always a good opportunity to grease the drive shaft splines. If the splines get dry it'll put extra stess on the UJ bearings.
