Well, i've finally got all the parts together and have set aside some time this week to install a "new"(thanks lurcher) driveshaft into the GS.
I am looking for any advice and tips on things to be careful with, as it is the first time I have attempted anything on this scale.
All advice welcome and will be taken without warranty...if that makes sense

You really do need to clean those glasses of your's more often...:comfort

why you.... !
this is the nearest i get to a "rose tinted outlook" without chemical abuse :D

hurry up and fix yours / i'm getting itchy feet looking at mine :P

shaft replacement

OK lets see if I can remember how we did mine on Saturday.

- remove rear wheel
- remove battery earth wire from Gbox, remove battery box.
- mine has a Y piece but if you have collector box that probably has to
come off
- disconnect paralever, remove shock
- remove gaiter clips and pull back front gaiter from gbox
- undo 4 front u/j bolts from gbox output
- undo bevel drive / paralever bearings - 2 different size allen keys
on mine the inner one needed heat before it would move
- remove bevel and stick its tapered bearings in with grease to
stop them falling out
- remove swing arm bearings, remove swing arm, remove shaft

Reassembly
- the front gaiter is a bastard to get on - we soaked mine in boiling water to
make life easier. Attach it to the swing arm and replace clip
- put shaft in swingarm, position swingarm and tie its back end to frame
to keep it horizontal
- mate up shaft to gbox output, replace 4 NEW bolts and tighten extremely
tight with aid of rubber mallet
- now you have to replace the front of the dear little gaiter on the back
of the gearbox. Rob made a small hook from a coat hangar, this is a PITA.
- replace swing arm bearings dont tighten yet
- lube the spline in the rear uj with special lube (normally white but Sherlocks
gave me blue) and position it facing back horizontally
- fit the rear gaiter to the bevel box and push the bevel box into the
swingarm so the splines match up - you may not get this at first attempt
- refit bevel box bearings, fit gaiter to swingarm
- centralise swing arm by adjusting both bearing pivots
- refit paralever and shock
- torque up everything according to the manual
- replace everything else

Think thats all
Cheers

Thanks Mike, :thumb2
that was easy to follow.
seems straightforward. (mind you - :blast famous last words, once i pick up a spanner... :D).

Mr. (Brother?) Monk, :D

any move on the shaft refit?

to all,
i have to strip mine (91 R100gs) to find the cause of a rumbly vibe i'm getting through the footpegs.
last time i got that 'feeling' was on me Guzzi - it was the u.j.
but it was simple to fix and obvious as soon as i got the swingarm off what the problem was. the shrapnel that used to be the u.j. bearings kinda gave it away :blast

but on a paralever - what do i look for?
i'm going to take off the rear wheel / bevel box off the swingarm / swingarm off and disconnect the shaft + front u.j. off the gearbox....
assuming this is the way to go :nenau

o.k - once it's apart what do i look for to diagnose the source of the vibes?
(which is enough for now - as i'm praying it's not IN the gearbox :()

Thanks in advance. :thumb2

I once had rumbly vibes (oo err missus) - enough to shake the mirrors badly, and assumed the worst.
What it was I had fitted another exhaust badly, with everything under tension, and no rearmost rubber mount. Have you messed with the exhaust ?

... rumbly vibes (oo err missus) -... Have you messed with the exhaust ?

i know what you mean :thumb2 but, sadly no.
not that i'm incapable of er.... 'basic errors' :augie - far from it. :blast
(on hols in France one time - horrible tappity, clattery sound coming from somewhere - freaked me :eek .... disappeared as soon as i did jacket zip up and end of zip stopped banging the tank!) :blast

i think it serious enough to warrant a strip down. :(

I would still check that the rubber bobbin at the rear of the silencer hasn't come apart (its not obvious just by looking at it).

I replaced my propshaft unnecessarily because of that :blast

(There was a small amount of play in the front UJ so it was on the way out - but it wasn't the cause of the increasing ferocity of the vibes I was getting).

Bob.

o.k. - will do - Thanks :thumb2
will report back then.

paranoia vs: optimism
score: one all - optimism to serve :D

Just to divert a moment Bob... Should there be the fixed mount AND the rubber bobbin mount? I only have the fixed one:nenau

John

As far as I know - Yes.

I have both.

I have the SS silencer which looks just like the original. I set it up with the rear rubber bobbin, then shimmed the fixed bracket with washers to suit. I think I've removed the tension from the system.

Feels OK anyway.

The mountings are not quite the same, though (I just happened to have a couple of pics on Photobucket :augie ).

Be careful if you buy a nice expensive SS silencer, though . . . The lower seam on mine had been ground off to a razor edge and I cut my hand taking it out of the wrapping :blast

This is interesting. My Bertha has always felt rough even though she goes extremely well. Two rear rubber bobbins have broken in the past and so I didnt bother replacing it. Sounds as if I need to refit the exhaust and the bobbins. No suggestion of propshaft probs as I have had it out and checked.

split bobbin

I had the bobbin split on me some time after refitting the exhaust.
I found that I had fitted the exhaust incorrectly and put a pulling tension on the bobbin causing it to separate.
The front upper mounting point should be behind the frame and not in front.
When I did it correctly, the bobbin was compressed behind the exhaust and the frame.

Very sensible posting - with regard to the silencer do-dah
So much so that I went to shed and re done mine as it broke a while back
I refitted the solid bracket so that the bobin was a slide in fit - I fitted 2 thin SS washers on inside of the bracket to the frame
Thanks Voyager :thumb2
