Will shortly be removing the flywheel from my Monster 1200r and need to find out if the retaining nut is left hand thread or not. Thanks in advance.

Sounds the same as my 2014 Multi then, that wasn't LH thread.
It's tight mind you, 340nm if I remember correctly, you will need the flywheel holding tool to get it off, and back on.
Why do you need to remove it? Gear lever return spring broken?
I would download the repair manual to be absolutely sure before opening it up.

Update: Turned out to be normal right hand thread, had to pay for a flywheel holding tool though, and it didn’t just pull off by hand like the videos on YouTube.

Neither of my pullers were man enough to move it and had to borrow a huge three legged hydraulic one to get it off but all done now.

When I did my multi once I got the nut off the flywheel just slid off the splines

While you have it off check the gear selector return springs its common for them to break and an utter pain to fix, I would also check the sprag while you are at it

Definitely replace both springs. Also, the flywheel has to go back on right, I’m sure there’s an oil way from the crank to the fly to keep the stator cool.

The video I watched showed the guy working on a multistrada so are obviously different for whatever reason. Yes replaced both springs as i was having difficulty finding neutral. Sprag clutch on mine is unmarked so all good hopefully!

Has replacing the springs helped with selecting neutral? I have been led to believe that difficulty selecting neutral is just part of these bikes' character

Not sure as I’ve not been out on it but briefly fired it up on my drive and yes it seemed easier to engage 1st and 2nd and return to neutral so we shall see I’ll report back when I’ve been out for a proper ride.

Thanks. I've got a 1200S and the same difficulty finding neutral. If I'm at a standstill, I rock the bike back and forward; if I'm coming to a stop, I select neutral while I'm still riding. But it's "character" 😂
