seen a few pics of various and sundry folk removing the muffler part of the exhaust system and then making a bit of tube to poke out the end of the cat. i don't have the time / materials / patience to make a bit of tube. can i just not bother or will i explode? is it difficult taking off the muffler?

thank you

i think what i'm trying to say here is why bother with the bit of pipe, what am i missing?

I think you'll find that some of those are actually specially constructed replacement exhaust systems, not just the cat with a pipe. I can't see that there should be any problems, other than that the exhaust gases might come out at an unwanted angle (e.g. all over your pillion's leg / shiny aluminium cases, etc).

I would suggest you try it and see. You can always get a bit of pipe made, shouldn't come to more than a couple of tenners.

done it. better noise, tiny bit quicker, handles small throttle movements at low revs better, and clutchless gearshifts inexplicably smoother.

re plugs - don't know what the logic is, but was even smokier than usual on start up after a night on the side stand. Other than putting it on the main stand, don't know what to do about this. assume nothing.

re pics - no camera. left the chromish shoulder on.

re mr carbon's tube - no garage, no tools but would love to do the work and turn it in to a motard before i waste a bunch of money on the k1200r. (rode the s at bmw track day. solid.)
