Can you point me in the right direction, DVD-R media there seems to be a number of dyes, what's the difference ??

My writer is 4x speed can 8x discs be written OK or must it be 4X speed.

Are there any brands better than others.

Thanks in advance.

You can use faster-rated discs, as I do, but they will just be written at the lower speed.

As to brands, I tend to always use Bulkpaq, which are widely available, usually very cheap, and always reliable.

Putting discs into your burner which are faster isn't an issue, you will just burn them at a slower speed.

The actual media isn't the important bit as you have found out, its the dye which makes up the recording surface. If your just burning data DVD's then I wouldn't worry about it, but if you want to burn video DVD's or games console discs then buy discs which have the RITEK dye. It is the best and most reliable dye, which will work in the most brands of players.

Fussy old tarts

Some DVD Writers are fussy old tarts.

Best to find out wot particular make / model DVD Drive you have and look on OEM's site for recommended media if you have problems, early Panasonics are very fussy and will only write to particular manufacturers media.

another vote for ritek & blank disc shop :thumb

BTW dunno if it's true, but i did read that most disc manufacturers use pioneer drives for testing & therefore that make has least/no compatability probs :nenau

Thanks

Thanks a lot fella's that's a great help, the collective wisdom is first class.

I intend to backup DVD movies and have the relevant software.
Ritek based it is then, The writer is in my laptop its a QSI, whatever that is, but i'm going to put one in my desktop, iv'e had a Plextor SCSI CD-R for many years and its been great, still is, but I note what you say about Pioneer.

Thanks again.
