It is now well known the S10 is restricted low down in the first three gears. I have been running the Clutch Jumper mod for a while, but today went the whole hog and had an ECU Flash.

This is a neat graph of 2nd - 6th (someone else kindly did) and really shows how badly restricted 2nd and 3rd gears are.

The (very cheap) clutch jumper mod looked to have completely removed the restriction, it also altered the fuelling as stock it was a bit weak low down and a bit rich up top, with the CJM the bottom end was richened up:

Now one thing I noticed later when reviewing Dyno graphs was the bike made 91BHP in third with CJM, but 95BHP in 5th (without CJM) although this could be the way the dyno "read" the power with the 5th gear load.

What does a Flash do

Well ,they all claim to remove these 1st - 3rd gear restrictions and give full power in every gear, some claim to optimise fuelling and ignition as well.

I think ECU Unleashed are (currently) alone in actively offering a Flash for modified bikes, the others tend to advise a power commander and that the flash is just to remove the restrictions.

As I have Arrow Headers fitted I needed a Flash that accounted for these, and ideally removed the surging the bike tends to suffer with a full system fitted. On mine it happened at low throttle settings from @1700 - 2200 RPM, no problem on the open road, but in traffic was a PITA. The Unleashed Flash has almost cured it, the area it happens to has been narrowed, you almost have to go looking for the problem now on my bike.

My bike was knocking out around 90BHP in stock trim, the Arrow Headers took this to a healthier 96 BHP and the Flash added another 3BHP to give a fairly respectable 99 RWBHP.

The torque curve is now very impressive, being dead straight pretty much from 3k to 7k (Awesome compared to the Big Dipper curves of the GS:D)

The dyno still does not give the whole story, the throttle response is far crisper and makes the bike feel a lot more powerful low down than the dyno gains suggest, I think because it now takes far less wrist movement for the bike to respond. It also feels so much smoother.

And compared to a bog stock Tenere you can see how much extra Ooomph it has at the top, most of this is down to the Headers and with a decent end can I am sure it would just top 100BHP

You could feel the motor get a bit breathless up top, you can see the rate of power increase tails of on a standard bike from 6k, and this was felt on the road, the headers made it feel much better up top, and now it tears past 7k, where standard it would be pointless to rev it much past 6.5k, and it still is pulling hard at the red line.

I am probably not quite done yet, this Unleashed Gen2 Flash could do with a bit more refining at very low speeds for modified bikes, hopefully they will get it sorted with a Gen3, but if not I would be tempted to get a power commander later on.

Compared to the Air Cooled GS motors this is now a monster, just solid grunt all the way, it was always smoother but definately not as quick as the Twin Cam GS up top, or in the restricted areas, now it just has massive amounts of shove at any revs in any gear.

Pretty much the perfect power for the road IMO, much more would just lead me into too much temptation

Finish the job, PC5, and it is quicker than the twin cam:), all though Thats not the reason to do all this, Its just a real torque monster ,You dont have to rev it to go quick, and mpg is great as well,:thumb

It's a bloody torque monster now!

Race Engineering reckon the fuelling is pretty good and the power commander will only make it a shade better, they have done a number of Tenere's both with and without the Power Commander so have experience of pretty much most setups. They said the Gen1 Flash was pretty poor with Modified bikes, but the Gen2 I had "fitted" seems to be pretty decent.

Thinking end can and Power Commander for next season :thumb

Interesting comment on MPG, assuming the Flash has not buggered the Utopia Meter it seemed to be doing a few mpg more on the motorway on the way back - need a load more miles to be sure, but I am certain it has not made it any worse.

You will find mpg a shade better, mine is always around 47 to 51, Not bad eh! Watch when you run without tc as the wheel comes up on throttle demand quite easy:thumb

I have been running the Clutch Jumper mod for a while,

I read that Bike did that mod to their long termer and then took it to a dyno specialist and they found that it although made the bike 'feel' livelier it produced less power everywhere and messed the fueling up which was not good for the bike long term If I recall.

Because the morons ran it in 5th or 6th - if you look at the all gears power grapg you can see it is massively restricted in 2nd and 3rd, and my own dyno test proved it gave a big mid range boost in third.

My concerns were with the "what else might not be so good" with this mod, although my bike ran fine like it for 4,000 miles, but it sure does run a lot better now.

Noticed it picked up much better with the Arrows fitted, it started to bring on the TC light in second when gassing it hard, now it really rips in 2nd, not turned the TC off, but even with it on you can feel the wheel trying to lift before the TC brings it back down to earth.

I am convinced the MPG computer is showing better figures, just gonna take a few tanks to confirm this is genuine and not just that the Flash changes have not screwed it up - or deliberately "tuned" it for those conspiracy theorists out there.

Glad you like it :thumb defo worth the effort and cost!

I am still loving this engine, really is the perfect motor for this sort of bike now.

I am also fairly certain mpg is better, just got a record 185 miles to the fuel light (typically 165 - 175 before) and although many miles were quite gentle a lot was also low gear work on narrow lanes - normally where it was noticeably worse than the GS on fuel.

Looks like a genuine 50mpg (Utopia Meter showed 53mpg) but a few more tank fills should give a more reliable picture - certainly a shade better than pre-flash.

Assuming it really does run a 23L tank dry the range would be great, I filled up at 216 miles and only got 19.5L in, I would never rely on the last litre being useable, but it would have had at least another 20 miles after already doing 30 miles with the light on.

I reckon a steady 60mph cruise would see well past 250 miles on a tank, and possibly 60 on "reserve".

The £350 for the flash should pay for itself in about 20,000 miles, but I reckon I will have had my moneys worth on my upcoming Alps trip, this engine will rock on those Alpine Switchbacks :D
