Eifel… long weekend

A great extended weekend away, with super arrangements by grantmac.

Or it was until my lower right leg went ‘Pop’ at Eindhoven in a petrol station. I have either ruptured my Achilles Tendon or ripped my calf muscle, dropping the 1600 on its side in the process, as I yelled and then hobbled in pain.

Ohh shite! Achilles tendon is not fun, a heating engineer I know of in Stanmore, had it popped at the beginning of 2020. Crutches and a boot for some time was his prescription.

Wishing you speedy recovery Richard. What a shite way to end what would’ve been an awesome jaunt….

Ignore my previous comment above…

Advised not to remove my boot, so I slept in it on the ferry. Will limp off, ride back to London and go to A&E at the Royal London to see what the news is, as I am meant to go to Stockholm on Wednesday and Le Mans, next week. Hey-ho, that’s life.

Trip report to follow.

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate & unforeseen accident
Hope you GWS

Time to move to a lighter bike then, should have taken the Himalayan

but this is very clumsy. GWS.

Ruptured Achilles Tendon. Now in plaster from lower knee to toes.

oops - one hopes it heals quickly and they have given you good drugs

have you retired yet? If not, go on the sick until you do...

Indeed a great long weekend we had. Weather was superb, roads pretty ok with traffic and all well until I headed home towards The Hague and left Richard to get some oil for his bike and take the slow road back to Hook of Holland. Hope you got home OK. Unil the next one!

Eek! Hope whatever it is is quickly sorted and you're back up and running again soon.

I'd not thought about the Harwich crossing before, going to Holland next month and automatically booked the tunnel

6-8 weeks of hobbling and a set of crutches? Get well soon Richard. Shame it had to happen now, with all the weather to be had over the summer, what a bummer.

enjoy, I am at a rally quite local to that area (about 30 mins) this weekend. I prefer the Dover to Dunkirk route and then as the OH's joints cannot take riding too far in a day we usually book into a hotel the other side of the ditch just into Belguim.

Ferry options to NL are pretty good and I think there is a thread somewhere here on the details but if your heading into Germany through Holland there's 3:
Harwich to Hook of Holland
Hull to Rotterdam
Newcastle to Ijmuiden.

Most popular the other way as they get you to different parts of the UK overnight.
Shortest is Harwich - Hook and the longest is via Ijmuiden. Costs vary but the Newcastle crossing is the worst; shit old feries and a load of pissed people enjoying a booze cruise.....forget any sleep.
Will post a few photos of our trip once I get clearance from Wapping...;);)

The ferry Harwich > Hook of Holland > Harwich works well, I’d say, for anyone in Suffolk, Essex or east London’ish. The two night time sailings are good and would beat either an early dash to the Chunnel or an overnight stay in Folkestone. Thus is particularly true if the end destination is say Holland itself or Germany north and / or east of say Bonn / Essen / Dortmund.

Much below Bonn and / or once you are starting to head towards Koblenz’ish, then (for people in the south east) the Chunnel probably wins it. This is especially true if you have the luxury of being able to cross over mid-afternoon to stay in perhaps St Omer, for a good start the next day.

Sorry to hear about your mishap Richard.
Hopefully the 1600 didn’t fall on your leg as well which would have been adding insult to injury!
Glad to read your positive comments about the Harwich ferry as I‘m now far more conveniently located for that.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Get well soon. Sailing to Holland in the near future, good to read how it is, Take care

Thank you, everyone.

I have just compared the route we took between the Hook of Holland and our hotel, just across the German border from Vianden, with a typical route that I’d take from Calais. Both are comparable, in that the Dutch route has motorway at the start, whilst the Calais route has motorway too, between Calais and Cambrai.

Dutch route is 250 miles

French route is 300 miles

Holland wins.

50 miles on D type roads or German equivalent is at least an hour’s travel time, which makes a difference if you plan on hitting the town. France comes back into it, if you go via St Omer the night before, as thst knocks about 30 miles off the 300 for the next day.

What did you think of that hotel near Vianden? I've seen it mentioned a few times. Looks okay for an overnight but I think I would prefer to be in Vianden if using one as a base for a few days as there are more choices for food etc.

The hotel over the border from Vianden was my choice Wessie. Simply because we have been coming here with our Club simce 2009. I have also stayed at the Hotel Petry in Vianden. Also good but more expensive and yes, a lot more things to do and choices for food, bars etc.
We always prefer Koerperich to Vianden. Lovely and quiet, easy and safe parkig although the carpark at the rear is a bit of a challenge. Food good. Rooms nice and relatively cheap. Still around €60 per night. Its a personal thing and the person thats been plugging this place in various threads is me. Dont think many others have had the experience

Regards ferries to and from NL yes I confess to being a “frequent traveller” and am always happy to help or advise
