Can you help me. My bike R100gs (1992)died on the road recently when the battery went flat. The charging light was not lit.
In the workshop I have got the light to work by bypassing the regulator and diode board etc, proving the ignition switch and handlebar emergency switch works
The regulator and diode board have been changed to a known working one and still not working. This only leaves the alternator and stator to test.
The Haynes manual test is only if the charge light is working, which is not, in this case. The test for the alternator is with 40 volts AC, which is in my mind impossible to achieve.
Now how do you test the rotor?
How do you test the alternator?
Thanks
David

How about checking if the alternator carbon brushes need replacing.....? Keep it Simple check the obvious that you can handle with ease. Then if it's not that move on to the more technical stuff. Where disgnostic equipment like a multimeter might be necessary.

Almost certainly be your rotor thats failed.

Move the brushes out of contact and check the resistance across the two slip rings. Should read 5.5 or near enough .

If rotor okay then check the blue wire as it exits the top of the forward engine area

I had one that had got a nick and just gradually broke thru

I've got a spare rotor & stator that are less than perfect (which is why I changed them) but they do work. You're welcome to try them to establish the fault.

:)Many thanks to all replies . new rotor fitted and bike now running again......:)
