Electrical question

Evening all :)

I've just fitted the cabling for a pair of PIAA spots to my 1999 R1150GS.

I have run 17A +ve & -ve cables to each spot, the +ves returning to a good and sturdy relay under the tank (where the ABS would go if I had it). The -ves go back to the battery(i).

I have a -ve run from the battery(i) to the relay and a main +ve feed from battery(i) to relay via a 10A fuse.

So can anyone advise me on the best place to find a trigger for the relay? I'm looking for a cable, preferably near the connectors on top of the front sub-frame, that I can tap into that is only live when the main beam comes on. Otherwise I could go to the lamp itself and tap into the cabling just behind the bulb, but if I can reduce the new cable run I'd like to.

Any suggestions?

Hi mylovelyhorse,

I took the feed for the spots on my 02 from the set of connectors under the tank above the Servo bracket. If it's the same on your bike it's the biggest block on the right hand side of the bike. Just check the colour of the wire from your main beam and look for it there (mine is a white wire..) I spliced and soldered the spots wire done and dusted all okay.

Biker,

My fault used the wrong word.. I use the power to the main beam (White) wire in the block to trigger my spots only live when main beam is on...:thumb

"Oh bother" said Pooh :(

Everything all nicely wired in, relays labelled and tucked away in that really handy space under the tank where the ABS would go if I had it (along with a small host of spares) and fuses (also labelled, of course) fitted where they can be accessed easily.

Took the bike out late last night to align the things so no one gets dazzled and one of the PIAA spots has an oddly diffuse glow. Inspection this morning shows that its gone and blown its lamp. Botheration.

If it were an easy to replace lamp, that'd be cool - but no, it's one of these: http://tinyurl.com/5ocmwj. So I have to get one of those from a shop somewhere on the route from Gosport to Canterbury on Monday. That's me plotting Mapsauce against the PIAA stockists list for the next hour or three.

Hey ho. At least the bike didn't explode :)
