I have just installed two of Les Wassalls HIDs. One was to replace a non-functioning 35w HID on the dipped.
Guess what ? the old HID was probably ok as the new dipped 50w HID does not work but the new main beam 50w HID does .:blast
So it is a switch or a wire or a connection.
It is 20 years since I did any electrics detective work on a vehicle. I can take things apart and put them back together most of the time.
What multimeter thingymajob should I buy since I suspect my ancient old two pieces of wire joining a battery a torch bulb and two crocodile clips all soldered together may not be sophisticated enough to test switches.
BTW it should be cheap and easily sourced.
Thanks

BTW anyone want an old and probably working NN 35w HID kit for their 1150?

I'll give it a try if you don't want it.

As for your lights, have you checked the fuse? I'd look there 1st then check there is power to the live terminal that used to power the old bulb, by using any 12v bulb and earth it out. If that doesn’t work I would try switch cleaner on the light switch before digging any deeper.

Good luck with it

Where is the fuse Please?

Thanks for the reply :thumb

but I do not know where the fuse can be. It is not in the black box under the seat and the schematic diagrams have left me none the wiser. I cannot see a fuse between the switch and the light itself.

Also is switch cleaner different from WD40 or ACF50?

Maplin do some really good little multimeters.
You can usually pick one up for about £30.

Sorry bud, I don't think I explained myself very well, I was thinking about the fuse under the seat that used to power the original headlight.

I don't know if wd40 or acf50 would work as a switch cleaner, but you can pick it up for a few quid on ebay.

There is no fuse for the headlight circuit, at least not on the 1150 so that's not your problem.

Check first for 12v at the headlight plug and for earth continuity.

If there is no supply to the headlight plug, trace the wiring back from the rh switch gear (even if no light switch is fitted) back to the multiplug under the tank and get the multimeter to work again. There should be continuity between the headlight plug +ve terminal and one of the the multi plug terminals on the main loom side of the plug. One of the other multiplug terminals is the 12v feed to the headlights and should be live with the ignition on. You're going to need a wiring diagram to identify the correct wires though.

Best of luck

Thanks for that
Hopefully the colours of the wires remains the same from the switch to the rest of the bike or are they all black!!! The live at the light holder is yellow. I cannot recall the wire colour in the switch but I think it was black :augie Off to buy a multimeter later today.

Be very careful messing with the headlight wiring. As stated above there is no fuse. If it shorts out you are probably looking at a new loom. I found this out the hard way. :tears

Needless to say, my headlight is now properly fused. Nice one BMW...
