I posted on this site a few weeks ago regarding a mates bike that was suffering from vibration through the pegs, seat and bars...just a worrying update...Dealer now inspected bike a 2014 TE which has been BMW serviced etc, and has found that the engine requires a full strip down but suspect that either crank is damaged or requires new little end shells! mileage on bike 7,100!!!

So much for BMW quality when you consider that this is supposed to be a premium brand bike costing 15k

If they were all doing this then I'd agree, however given the numbers that BMW are producing there are bound to be a minimal number with issues, just unlucky and inconvenient for your mate.

You may have been better off updating the 'Vibration' thread so those following it know the latest info.

I dont recall any mention of engine noizes in the origional post,
With that diagnosis it would be knocking and rattling, so presume its deteriorated,
Hopefully its under warranty,
Let us know the outcome of the strip down,
Roamer,

That's terrible - almost as bad (but not quite) as the Honda AT failing DCT gearboxes!

I am told that he was informed off a slight tapping noise when he took the bike in for its 6k service but apparently it has got worse.
Fair play to the dealer, they have been very helpful and supplied a loan bike until issue resolved.
This fault has been diagnosed with 4 days of his warranty remaining!
i will update when engine is stripped down.

I'm very surprised that BMW is paying the dealer to strip the motor down unless they know what the issue is and it is more cost effective repairing rather than replacing the engine

My guess is that they'll strip it to diagnose, then BMW will ship a new engine.

Can happen with any bike to be fair. Though you will find more MTS1200 engine failures than GS1200 failures from what I saw on the Ducati forum!

Dealer have stripped engine as obviously BMW would not authorise further work until fault diagnosed.

The dealer have allowed my mate to look at the engine internals and it could clearly be seen that the cylinder bore liners were coming away from the walls and as such BMW have authorised a new engine/gearbox which is currently being fitted.

Fair play to all parties involved in that the bike is being repaired under warranty (4 days before expiry!!!) and he should have it back on the road by the weekend.

There is a moral there about dealing with issues as soon as they arise. Although BM may have made a good will payment outwith the warranty it's still far better that they foot the bill for everything. To be fair I've never heard of that issue before. Are the bores still nikasil?

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that statement as the new engine will only come with the remainder of the manufacturers warranty remaining on the complete vehicle. If has as has already been indicated the bike was about to run out of it's 2 year warranty then the motor is likely to come with no warranty unless the OP purchased an extended warranty policy?

If the OP had made a contribution to the repair of only £1 then the warranty on the replaced component would have remained with him

Correct, but nowhere near as bad as the legendary BMW ABS pump failure.
For the past 4 yrs me and my 3 main riding buddies between us have a KTM ; no issues except a wheel that kept bleeding air, my Guzzi; final drive bearing went at 10K miles £150 repair now at 20k miles all good, R1200GS ABS pump failure at 17,000 miles quoted £1400 for repair 6mths ago , K1300GT just hit 14,000mlies last month and ABS pump failed quoted £1345 for repair.
My Honda has only just passed 11,000 miles without fault so bit too early to comment .

Moral of the story is buy an Italian bike or an Austrian one if you are buying out of warranty :D;)

To be honest I had had far more warranty work done on BMWs than Ducatis, whilst neither have broken down whilst riding, BMWs have broken down at home and whilst in the dealers care.

I will be taking out extended warranty on my GS when the time comes.
