Hi, I'm picking my new GS Rallye up tomorrow (hopefully)

What's thoughts on spraying the important parts (joints etc) with engine lacquer?
I've not much experience recently with paint types..
Thinking it'll keep the corrosion at bay..

I doubt it'll do much as the surface prep underneath the factory paint is an issue

Bit like sticking lipstick on a pig

Not good for £16500 or £149/month bike:D

Soon as you spray the engine with any kind of lacquer you will invalidate any engine paintwork warranty

If BMW have changed their production/surface prep procedures then you may be ok, if not you pay's your money and take your chances. Quite a few of us have had problems on here with engines, final drive and swing arm corrosion. Others have not, Engineer swears by FS365, I have had 2 bikes professionally coated with ACF 50 neither ridden in winter or rain nor kept outside or kept in a damp garage but both suffered engine corrosion. It really is a lottery, if the BMW were not such a good bike I would look at something else.

Well, all I do is wash it and then a light spray GT85 over the engine and frame. 20 odd thousand miles and no corrosion.

Bloody hell!! Corrosion ALREADY?!

Enjoy your new ride Phil :thumb

Reply from BMW non commitment, refer me to dealer who can't commit either..
A coat of prefessionally applied lacquer while new was my preferred route.
I'll not do anything now except try the Fs365 which I've never tried..

1. Could well imagine there would be traces of oil on the engine from manufacture so you would have to degrease first.
2. For lacquer to adhere properly you would need to key the surface first.
3. You are going to have different shades all over your components.
3. Lacquer will peel if you do not do 2.

Ive still to tackle my new GSA but putting on and maintaining a thin coat of something GT85, FS365 or ACF 50 will keep the moisture away from the uncoated aluminim areas that are the catalyst for corrosion.

I'd certainly be casting a very careful eye over a brand new BMW tomorrow before I was handing over my debit card or signing the PCP documents....

Earlier in the week I saw a new R9T urban scrambler which was only launched and registered less than 7 days ago - it already was corroded & the front spindle was red rust

Hard to believe a brand newly launched bike is already corroding within 7 days in the middle of summer

I don't think I'd buy a new BMW at present

Hope you think the Rallye is good

Do lacquer on where the spokes connect to the rim. That is one place that will benefit from the lacquer.
