Engine loss of power

I suddenly lost power in 4the gear as I changed up. I was doing about 60mph. When I pulled the clutch it was as though I had applied the braked hard. I had to change down the and the bike stuggled to accelerate. This continued for about 1/4 of a mile. I thought I may have had a flat tyre. On stopping there was no problem with the rear tyre. Brakes were not hot.
It suddenly cleared. Any thoughts?
 
Lack of fuel for some reason would cause the instant power loss. Perhaps you have/had water in the tank? Perhaps the pump controller has a loose plug?
 
It was strange it felt like the bike was being braked hard ended up going to 1st gear. After a short while back to normal so would have thought it was not a loose plug on the controller. It cleared quickly and did about 20 miles with no issues....confused
 
mmmmm, if its definitely not the brakes then something seizing up perhaps :nenau It could be, well lots of things. A few more clues. like noises before during and after, how fast, how hot, any recent history or work or changes.
 
Bike has done 10k. Always serviced by main dealership and has had no modifications. There was no noise when it happened. Problem just suddenly happened and went away after a short period. Had been on the spin for about 15miles of good twisty roads on an evening spin in the dry.

Best way of describing is it felt like someone was trying to pull the bike back as I was accelerating.
 
If the decelleration was akin to 'brakes applied' yet the brakes were not hot (you did check both sides front and the rear?), I can only think of bearings breaking done but you would have heard/felt that.

Perhaps drive shaft....
Have you tried spinning front and rear wheel by hand on centre stand?

Both front and read brakes were not hot. Just tried spinning both whiles and no problems or noise. No leaks around the shaft drive, or remnants of a small animal.
Perhaps doggy fuel ???

Will be taking for a spin tomorrow and see how it is then...
 
Dodgy fuel would cause the engine to misbehave and in extremis, cause engine braking but you put 'clutch pulled in' so I ruled out gearbox/engine.
My bad, still can't see where the kinetic energy is going......
 
Im thinking electrical. Maybe immobiliser lost contact.

For anything mechanical to cause such a braking effect you'd have follow on symptoms.
 
Trip out today. 150 miles no issues. However the cruise controls in playing up. When you activate it, you should be able to pull switch back and it drops mph by 1-2 mph. However when you pull switch back it now turns it off. ?? Issue with this causing problems??
 
There is an aftermarket kit for them, which I would love, but it's expensive and a custom fit.
Need more info. Does it use original BMW switchgear and are we sure it's an R1200GS/GSA 2004-2013?
Pics would be good, too.
 
Just a thought but were you just out of a tight corner? Bike lent over? Maybe you have a bit of water in the tank and it hit the pump? Then straightened up and problem gone?
 
The OP says that when he pulled the clutch in it felt like the brakes were on. This would indicate to me its not an engine issue but brakes or drive train? Or am i misunderstanding the post?

Could be but surely if it was that bad the brakes would be smoking.
 
No dont know the difference between hexhead and LC so maybe the post needs to be moved...... any how been biking for 20 plus years....I did not apply the brakes before this happened. Guys behind did not see any brake lights come on. Driven bike numerous times since and no further issues. So assuming it was a fuel problem, bike is due for a 12 k service in a few weeks so be interesting if anything is picked up then.
