Due an oil change and service on my Xchallenge and I've read up and am confident in doing the oil change but what make and grade is the best to use.

Am I right in thinking that fully synthetic oil is not recommended?

According to the book you'll need about 2.3l or either 10w40 or 15w40 mineral oil to API classification SH.

I think i've currently got halfords own semi synthetic 10w40 in mine, and no problems.

You won't need anything fancy. It's not like it's a ktm that only has a teaspoon of the stuff in the sump.

Just been reading about using semi-synthetic/mineral oil until 10000 miles and then use fully synthetic.

Think I'll stick with a good quality 10/40 oil as its available almost anywhere and it will mix with all except fully synthetic (which is very expensive!)

Depends how often you intend changing the oil. My bike hasn't done more than 2K miles between changes.

I thought i'd read somewhere about clutch issues with fully synthetic, but would interested to know how you get on with it if you choose to try.

Avoid fully synthetic, as LTP says they suffer with clutch issues, especially when hot.
Halfords sells a 10w40 grade motorcycle oil that is fine for use in these bikes.

Thanks everyone....I've got some 10/40 silkolene oil left from my sons xr400.
That's a good oil I'll use that this time around.

I've just switched to a good Semi to try it.

However, on my Kazakh trip last summer, I put in a good fully synthetic before shipping the bike. It did 11,000 kms in some really hot/rugged conditions and finally got changed 2 weeks ago, after a total of approx 12,000kms. Bas at Hyperpro told me it was still in good condition!

I think as long as you use a good oil, it doesn't really matter....semi or fully synthetic.
