Hi all,

Wondering if someone might help identify the possible source of an engine oil leak I found on my way home tonight.

Low oil indicator came on whilst riding. First look showed engine oil dribbling down both sides of the engine aft of the cylinders. At home whipped off the side panels and tank to get a better look. Found a pool (!) of oil sat on top of the engine (under the alternator), which had splashed the surrounding parts (from air flow I presume). Oil cooler and pipework dry.

Anyone know where the leak might be coming from?

Need to get sorted this weekend as I use her daily and have a 600 mile/week commute.

Thanks guys.

Just a guess could it be from the oil seal on end of crankshaft that drives the alternator? If not that a small puncture in the oil cooler matrix?

Hmm take it to the dealer tomorrow for a good check up !
They may be able to fix it for you there and then !

I seem to remember a similar post last year, there is an oil temp sensor on the top RH side of engine, some of these connections are known to have cruddy quality washers. It wont be the pressure switch as that is below the LH cylinder.

Think you could be right there trainman I seem to remember that too. I think the washer was alloy and it had corroded and let oil leak out.

It was my mate Marks GSA (Rowbo99) as we toured Scotlandshire. As trainman states, an oil temp sensor sits atop the right hand side of the engine. The alloy crush washer on his was corroded causing the oil leak.

An easy fix once you get the fuel tank off, unscrew the sensor, clean the face of the engine block and refit the sensor with a new crush washer. Spray with ACF on completion to prevent future corrosion.

Thank you very much for the info guys.

Oil temp sensor base quite corroded and RH side of the alternator wet suggesting spray from that side. Have just finished replacing it, and now defrosting my fingers!

Hope that was the cause, guess I'll find out on Monday...

Thanks again guys, you're a helpful bunch.

See you on road! :)
