engine oil - mineral or synthetic

15/50 semi synthetic in all bikes now - no more Power 1 full synthetic :) apart from K1200/1300 and S1000RR which remains at 5/40

As I do my own servicing I buy whats on offer periodically from Opie Oils that's at the correct grade as per the manual. I'm not fussed whether its mineral or synthetic. Up until now I have only used Castrol 20/50 4T mineral as the pricing was so good from Opie. However, I just bought some 10/50 Fuchs esther based fully synthetic from them for about £35 for 5 litres so going to give that a go at the 36K mile service later on this year. I'm sure both I and the bike won't notice any difference really.

Can't see the problem. After a while the oil gets thin and burns off so just keep topping it up. Who needs oil changes. Sorted. ;)

Didn't that Charley Watsisname run a Honda Cub on used fish'n'chip oil successfully before chucking it off the top of a multistory block of flats?

If chip fat is good enough for the most successful bike in history then it's good enough for a fuggin old Beemer :beerjug:

Mind you, I'd play safe and use Extra Virgin Olive oil, not any old beef dripping.

...but where you gonna get a virgin round 'ere?? Never mind "extra's" :green gri

Fluff.

Helpful answer? What next? You dont belong on here Skywalker.

As I've just sold my GSA with a massive 315 miles on the clock I'm unsure what oil to run it on now?

(I'll never see the bike again and someone else will be paying for the oil anyway so should I really be worrying?)

Soooo. You never actaully got it run in after all. So I take it you have plumped for the Honda 90 step through then? Remember to thrash the tits of it from the off it will pay dividends in the end!

I use 3 in 1 oil and I've never had a problem :thumb2
the bike takes 34 standard sized 140ml flexcans from empty and each can comes with a convenient drip nozzle with cap . At £3.05 per can I really can't see by it . :D

This is a rather bold and forthright statement and I really want believe that this question has been simplified as proclaimed. It may be more convincing if it was supported by elaboration/explanation/evidence or source.
Please?

Skywalker works for a well known and respected bmw main dealer, and is himself a highly regarded mechanic/technician in the dealer network.

Does it really matter if you put 15/50 semi or 10/50 into the bugger  not sure there's a huge different in cost you can get the expensive stuff for less than 40 quid.

Would avoid using that mineral shite on a £15k bike though :comfort

He he, no but it was by the book and it may yet come back to me (its a commission sale)

I'm diverting the funds to a once in a lifetime camper van purchase. I will certainly return to a 12 GS in the next twelve to fifteen months (when my savings have recovered) but whether it's a hex or a watercooled remains to be seen!

I currently ride an r100r daily and it is so good at its job (apart from the 40mpg) it made the GSA rather redundant. Of course I'll miss it but it will be "the year of the campervan" this year and I'm pretty excited at that prospect.

Thanks for that - it would appear then that he posts authoritatively, and reflects BMW latest policy. Be interesting to see if all dealerships follow suit. But then how would I ever find that out and does it really matter? Therefore strike that, it's not interesting at all.:thumb

I wish you luck with that one... camper van WTF I hope its got a big happy sun on each of the front doors and a load of hash hidden somewhere safe inside... camper van sheesh! If its a Vdub make sure you check the oil regularly I know someone who did not and nearly ended up with a load of alloy washers :D

Not another middle aged professional gent checking out the surf on "magic seaweed" when he should be working, so that he can clutter up the narrow lanes of North Devon in his Vee Dubya & live the dream come the weekend?
These pillocks can be spotted from Croyde beach, bobbing around on their body boards BUT never actually attempting to stand up or catch a wave.
Once they are nice & cold they can be seen in the surf shops trying on clothing best suited to a 19 year old, usually with O'neil, Quicksilver or Rip Curl emblazened on it. :comfort

One life duuude ... live it!
