hi , my gs1150 has an engine problem ,, any ideas, at around 30mph the engine seems to pulse or misfire and the bike can be felt lurching forward . i discovered an air leak at the left throttle body by spraying it with carb cleaner and fixed this but it has made no diffrence .. the bike is standard with no mods as far as i know .. any ideas ???:nenau

how do i do that ???

Remove fuse 5.
Wait a minute.
Replace fuse 5.
Ignition on but don't start the engine.
Fully open and close throttle three times.
Ignition off.
Start as normal.

As I believe this procedure is only remapping the TPS I'm not sure whether this will make any difference to your problem, but can't hurt.

balance the injectors , change plugs before anything, check all plugs are firing properly, esp on the twin sparks, coils can go, a reset will av little or no effect on an 1150

what are the best plugs to use ??? think i'll try that first

just looking through service receipts and it seems the dealer tried a replacement coil pack , new leads , etc ,on the bike back in march and came back with no fault found .... think the previous owner has been chasing the problem before me

if the new plugs dont work anyone got a techlusion for sale or loan ????

Dont bother with the techlusion, just make yourself a Manometer, mines a bit of timber, some aquarium plastic tube, a few BT cable clips and a small amount of hydraulic fluid, these bikes respond really well to careful adjustment of the valve clearances followed by a good setting up of the throttle balance. :thumb2

take it thats a vacum gague to balance the throttle bodies ???

some instructions now on how it works please :thumb2
i.e. do you connect one end of the vacum hose to one throttle body and mark the fluid level , then try the other and balance it that way ?? or both ends , one on each throttle body and try and level the fluid in both sides of the U in the bottom of the tube ??? or am i a mile out ???:blast

nice bit of kit anyway mate !!!!! like it a lot

Try adjusting your TPS, that should cure the problem.

BMW dealers will adjust it to a set value, this isn't usually the most efficiant .

Try 3.06 -3.80 volts, you'll have to reset the idle speed to suit.

steptoe could you please email me

Your name has been passed to me by a friend from the XRV forum, I leave in London and would liek to test ride a GS....if I have been given the right inffo u may be able to help....
Thank u and apologies for using this thread

surging is all down to setting up properly, once everything is set right, valves, balance, tps, its usually gone

will a home made Manometer balance the TB ok or will i need a Twinmax ???

i take it the sequence will be ......

1 ..replace spark plugs

2.. check valve clearence .

3.. adjust TPS.

4.. set idle and balance TB:nenau

Yep - that's the sequence.

A home made manometer will balance the TB's just fine - nothing is more accurate.

ok,,, just checked the TPS and it's sitting at 3.30 volts .. so , i dont want to be touching that untill i have done the rest of the work ,, is that right ??

what i have read is that lowering the voltage will reduce surging , but lean the mixture ,, and increasing will richen the mixture and cause more surging and backfiring ... is this correct ???

ma heid is gettin sore ,,, time for beer me thinks !!!:)
