Engine problems

Hey, I have a 2006 R1200gs adv that is mis-firing when the engine is loaded. It has been getting progressively worse to the point that its becoming a safey issue. It was recently serviced which I though may resolve the problem but it still has been occurring. It has 18k miles on it. I'm suspecting it may be time to replace the spark plugs.

Has anyone else experienced this or perhaps have an idea of what might be the problem?

5 minute job to fix or borrow one from a mte and switch over to prove problem is stick coil.

Yes, I had this problem. It was a spark plug, there was sign of the spark tracking along the porcelain insulation. At the 18000 mile service the plugs are not changed. If they only gave it a short road test after service they may not have noticed the fault. If I remember correctly it was one of the plugs on the underside of the heads. You will need a slim box spanner to remove the plugs.

Engine under load 18,000 miles?

Probably stick coils they tend to break down under pressure when hot especially if there is corrosion on the casing?

Maybe they damaged them refitting rocker covers etc??

Another here for a cracked spark plug - same symptoms as I had.

Remove the lower spark plug coils and inspect them for splitting and corrosion under the rubber cover part, I bet you that the laminated iron cores have badly rusted and expanded, cracking the casing and leading to water ingress and failure.

Its literally a ten minute job with a torx driver to remove the protective shroud and remove/replace the coils. Add another 5 minutes to change the spark plugs.

New 'stick' coils are about £75 per side IIRC.

Best the change the spark plugs whilst you are at it, probably a fiver each at a guess.

Failing to do anything about it could lead to serious misfire and the potential for mechanical damage.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've got some new plugs to install and while I'm at it as suggested I'll inspect the lower coils. I'll let you know how I get on.

Interesting problem....... same diagnosis we have been having in South AFrica with our 2006/2007/2008 & 2009 models. Engine running too lean - fine until a load is on the bike - or riding up a hill.....

Replaced the plugs last night and is now running like a dream. No more miss firing and idle sounds much healthier. Quite a pain in the ass trying to find a spark plug socket that would fit so ended up grinding down a standard socket.
